    Sony is so stupid.
Yeah, I know there are a lot of models each making what looks like an advancement over the previous. Mostly being changes related to the laser and CD tray, kind of like Sony was trying to fix it's design flaw.

      I hope this helps you,

My PS2 will read dvd's but not cd's and ther were 2 things effecting this. 1. I realigned the lazer by carefully taking off the top and adjusting a small plastic disk which effects the angle the lazer hits at. It effects it's tilt. 2. I cam across this accidently, the plastic at the center of a dvd is slightly thicker than a cd. My drive would give this odd 1/2 spin - stop sound. While the ps2 was open I held down the top of the drive slightly while powering up a cd and it worked great. Obviously you don't want to do this during an entire installation, so I took a buisiness card cut a hole in it's center and taped it to the top of my cd. This increased it's thickness enough for my drive to grab it properly. So depnding on what is actually causing your drive error, whether it's data interpretation ie flawed or misaligned laser, or physical ie the drive mounts are wearing this may help you.

      Have a happy day

I heard something similar, and it's that by adding weight, you can help the problem. Something as simple as adding two strips of masking tape on opposite sides has helped fix the problem.

But I'm gonna toy around with the aligning thing. I'll mark it's original position, and tweak it slightly until it works. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes, the tape thing and all depends if you hear a clicking sound when the CD spins. A LOUD clicking sound is the result of the laser running into the CD, the lighter more wobblyish click sound is the CD spinning off balance in which case the tape trick will work because you are reducing the space there is for a distortion to occur and to a degree creating a counter balance to help the CDs spin more smoothly.

It all depends on what issues you are noticing the drive is doing.
