  • Crackling Audio

I picked up a ATi Radion x1600 graphics card a few weeks ago to play Oblivion and ever since I've been having nasty audio conflicts with FFXI. Shortly after booting the game up I get this nasty crackling on all audio in the game (SFX and Music), as well as any audio playing on my computer (Ventrilo, Winamp, etc). I've had similar problems before when a program was rendering the sound twice, which give it the massive reverberation effect which is causing the funky sound and horrible crackling noise.

My sound card and video card do occupy different IRQ channels, so I know it's not that. I have experienced the problem with both the ATi Catalyst drivers as well as the Omega drivers; I use the Omega's now so I can play Oblivion properly. I have the most up to date drivers from Creative for my SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 24-bit and have recently done a full wipe of codecs and reinstalled the full K-Lite Codec Pack.

Any suggestions please! I love the sound and music off FFXI, it's a huge part of the experience and I hate to miss out with all the new stuff Aht Urghan will have to offer.

    Re: Crackling Audio

I have the same issue but only on my new computer I bought a radeon x800 for. I assumed it was because the sound card is crap and have kind of lived with it for a while. Sorry I don't know how to fix it though :\.

      Re: Crackling Audio

I have found a fix for this problem, and it's really simple. Restart the computer and before launching any other applications (particulairly anything that's graphics/audio intensive) start up FFXI. The problem is very random and I still can't pin down the actual root cause, but a fresh restart seems to do the trick.
