    Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

    Framerate:
Yes, FFXI seems to be working just fine in Vista, once you disable UAP (or as AKosygin rightly suggests, properly configuring security access). The PlayOnline frontend didn't seem to like AeroGlass too well, though, so I had to flip that off when running. PlayOnline also had issues on my particular system going to full screen mode and back...I found it best to just leave it Windowed.

Outside of that, FFXI itself seems to update and play just fine.

I have not tested any version of Vista beyond 5308, though. I've just not had the time...

I've had no luck getting FFXI to run in the 32-bit 5384 Vista Build. The config programs won't even work.

Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit Vista?
I've not tested the 64-bit..it's hard enough to get the thing to run on 64-bit XP.

I'm using the 32-bit version. I'm running POL in XP SP2 compatibility mode and with visual themes, desktop composition, and display scaling all disabled. Still no luck though.

And what about the security settings mentioned above, or diabling UAP entirely (if only to eliminate it as a cause).

UAP is also disabled. I don't see how anyone can get anything accomplished with that enabled.

Here is what I'm getting when I attempt to run POL.

                Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Interesting. Funny how many things get broken between builds.
I'm afraid I can't be of much help at the moment since my Vista box is down (had to scavenge the RAM for another system), but it'll hopefully be back up soon, and I can test the newest build.

Just out of curiosity, what version are you installing from? My setup used the Vana'diel Collection DVD... If you're using an earlier version, perhaps the problem is with that specific version of POL which still needs updating...
Have you tried copying a fully up-to-date installation on top of the initial install?

                ...just grasping at straws here...

                  Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I'm using the original FFXI + Zilart, Promathia expansion, and Aht Urhgan expansion.

I really wouldn't know where to begin if I copied files from an up to date POL. I might end up with conflicting registry entries.

That was it, the Vana'diel Collection POL works. Thank you so much for your help!

                      Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Glad to hear that it worked for you.
In answer to your earlier question, I've had a couple situations where I did a base install of the game and it's expansions, then copied a fully-updated version of the game from another system, allowing it to overwrite the earlier files.

When you load up POL or FFXI, it will check ALL the files and then continue normally. However, checking all the files takes a god-awful long time on most systems, so I would only recommend such a thing for a system that's using dial-up...since otherwise it doesn't save just a whole lot of time on updates.

By the way, did you encounter the same odd graphics problems with POL with Aero turned on? Or problems with POL full-screen?

                        FFXI & Vista Beta 2

So far I am currently installing FFXi on Vista Beta 2. It installed from my DVD just like it would on XP.

I also Installed it from my CDs and it installed fine.

Play Online opened and downloaded the new version of POL and restarted. I was able to log into my account.

As of Now June 13th 2006 5:00 PM, Its in the process of updating FFXI. I can say now that if you backuped the XP FFXI folder and transfered it to the Vista FFXi folder, POL tells you it can not verify the version and you wont be able to start FFXI.

I will update this post once I can confirm if FFXI works with Vista Beta 2 or not.

Update June 13th 2006 5:50PM - After Downloading and Updating FFXI.

Well it seems that Vista updates FFXI faster then XP does. After Installing POL and FFXI the update process took a little more then an hour and I remember XP taking at least 2 hours to download and install the files.

The game opened the way it should have and seems to run just fine. The configuration settings seem to work, and gamepad works as well.

I didnt do anything special to get it working except during installation.

On the DVD installation, once you insert the DVD, Vista will automatically run the setup for POL. You have to browse the DVD and run the installations for FFXI and expansions. The TOAU DVD ran the setup as well. Seems that Vista doesnt run the autoexe anymore, and instead scans the disk and determines what needs to be done.

Same goes for the CD installation.

Im using the Beta 2 Build 5384 and I can confirm that my computer is running FFXI just fine.

Oddly enough POL ran better in Vista's normal settings with compatibility mode turned off. With compatibility mode set to XP SP2 POL tends to crash every so often.

I haven't tried POL in full screen mode yet.

                            Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Ok as for the topic title, yes. Don't use vista.

                            heres dome facts.
Already mentioned about the windowing mode, which is why SE are not supporting the game on vista, there are many other software companies doing the same.

Second specs for Vista want you to have min 1GB ram and min P4 or AMD 64 chip. it walso takes up 15GB of your HD (7GB of this is for storing information about everything you do, basically for those in the know with computers its like the FAT32 partition, storing information on what programs you have used, internet sites visited and downloaded and a archive cache of every file you have used on your computer)

Vista is even more memory intensive than XP so to run FF without any problems you'd be advised to run it on a machine with 2GB ram. also teh windower takes up a bit of processing power so you will loose some in game performance as its runnign all the extras in vista as well as the game.

If your thinking of buying it think again. The first main release of vista will be only released with new computers with it pre-installed, and you only get a recovery CD (a bit like what Dell do with win xp) you will not be able to buy it off the shelf easily, its their way of trying to cut down on piracy. I beleive a code for the software is integrtated with your BIOS/CMOS systems basically linking the OS with your computer only.

Its becuase of this that many comapnies and people will not go to vista until they decide to buy a new PC, so the envisaged removeing of support for XP has been delayed which to stop piracy they have added the windows genuine program into the latest updates, where if you don't have a genuine copy of XP then it flashes up all these messages until you pay for a licence, i do not condone software piracy but if you so happen to have a not so genuine copy of XP set a restore point before downloading a update and if you get the messages, just roll back and download the update from a 3rd party site.

I doubt vista will be on the scene for another year yet and unfortunately if SE wishes to keep people playign they will ahve to give in to the all mighty (Mr gates) and release a patch to allow it to be used.

I wouldn't waste your time with vista until this happens, you will only suffer many problems with it not just with FF but other programes etc.

All above inforamtion is from someone in the know who will be buidling PC with vista installed for companies.
