          Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

          Hmm....

I'm getting a dell laptop this week with vista on it and I'd like to play ffxi on it,
I have the original FFXI w/RoZ, CoP and ToAU expansions

          Laptop specs are:

          Vista Home Premium
          Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 (1.83GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400 HyperMemory
160GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Can I install with my original ffxi or should I get the vanadiel collection? (which isn't available in stores where I am for some reason, only xbox vers.)

...and what extra steps do I need to take to get it to work properly? after reading this thread it seems like there's a lot of other things you need to do to make it work...

i installed mine from the original discs also.

you do need to do a few things to make it work, skim through this thread and myself and others have explained what we did to get ffxi to run on vista.

            good luck!

just wanted to give my thanks for the advice, im sure you helped out alot of people. And yes it does work fine on vista with and updated version of POL installed from either a cd, file transfer, or a web based storage site like http://www.xdrive.com or http://www.box.net . Anyways thanks again and hope to see you online ^^.

There are many ways to do this.

                  1.

                  Open Control Panel.
                  2.

Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account".

                  3.

Click on one of the user accounts, for example you can use the Guest account.
                  4.

Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.

                  5.

Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings" link.

                  6.

In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.

                  7.

You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready.

It should be left open to see if there are any issues with the new viewer. I really doubt SE tested it very throughly.

It probably went something like this:

Jim: Hey guys, I finally got that new PC put together!
                        Tim: Sweet
                        Kim: nice
Goingoutonalimb: Have any problems with it?
Jim: With the computer itself no, but I had a lot of problems making the POL viewer work. I had to read some forums to get it working on Vista.
Tim: Oh, think we should make POL work with Vista?
Jim: Would save me a lot of hassle
                        *The next day*
Tim: Well, I made a program that allows Vista to emulate POL, it's like porting it, but easier!
Jim: Just like FFXI for windows!
Tim: Exactly! And all that's left to do now is install it on a fresh computer and test it.
                        *Two hours later*
Jim: Well, it looks like it's working fine.
Tim: Yeah, got logged in ok
Jim: Think we should make sure all the features work?
Tim: Nah, let's just wait for people to bitch about it on forums, saves us the hassle of having to test every little bit.

Yeah. It gets really bad sometimes. I just bought this laptop in June, and Vista gives my PC a score of 4.5, and the FFXI benchmark was outstanding with it. However... FPS lag is horrible with weather effects on or with tons of people around.

Starting to get fed up with Vista and just go back to XP.
