You have to purchase a copy of the game for the PC, PS2 or Xbox360 at your local game retailer, install it, and then agree to pay a monthly fee.

This site is just a forum community for discussing the game itself.

You can find the official website here, and here is a link to Gamestop, where you can purchase the game for the PC and all of it's currently released expansions.

There is also a starter pack that you can purchase for about $2 (looks like they lowered the price from $4.). It can give you a taste of the game if you're not certain you want to buy the full version outright.

But what if I have the full game installed already? Is there another way to pay membership?

If you already have a copy for the game, you follow the instructions in your manual to set up a PlayOnline account, as well as register the game and it's various expansions. Then you purchase a content ID (first one is $12.95, and additional ones on that same account are $1 each), which you use to make a character with.

You can pay with a credit (Visa/Mastercard) or debit card (provided your debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it).

I don't have any POL manual because I just downloaded it. Uhm, so where can I sign up/register to get my character account?
            ------------------------------------------
Is it only available in the USA?!?!? Cuz I live in Canada..

You have to purchase registration codes in order to register the game that you downloaded illegally. There is no way to get around that.

So, follow one of the links above in order to acquire the various codes you'll need.

I'm having problems with playign the game on Vista. Every two to three seconds I get half a second of lag, and it starts right from the start of the movie when I load up the game. I've closed all background apps to see fi it would work but it did nothing. I have an Intel Core 2 4300 1.80GHz, 1gig of RAM and an ATI Radeon X1650. It's a brand new PC, bought it cheap, but surely even this could run FFXI? This is doing my head in!

I'm having the same issue, everything runs fine, but every few seconds there is a split seconf freeze frame, and it is very consistent. like every 2 secs. Windows Vista with all updates to this day, Core2Duo E6750 2.66mhz, 2 GB 1333mhz Ram, 512 ATI 2600 series PCI-E card DDR3. Any ideas? Newest drivers from ATI as well.

in reply to Cayde, what size is your Graphics card? my old PC had a x1600 512mb card, but the requirements for FFXI is only 128 which I'm sure you have. 1GB of ram is somewhat low for Vista though. It should run FFXI good enough. What kind of motherboard are you using, I have a Asus P5E3, has to be something with our cards I am guessing, since we both are using ATI chipsets, have you updated to the newest drivers?

My x1650 is a 512mb card. I've updated to the latest drivers, but still nothing. I'm not sure what motherboard I'm using though.

kk, sine your using Vista, and my current course in school happens to be Vista related crap, perhaps we can aid each other in this since we are having the exact same problem. Run DXDIAG and check your display1 properties. What DDI version are you running? (Ex or something to that effect, also check your Direct X version. I am running DX10, but as we speak I am updating it to the newest version if I already do not have it. Based on what I can see in various other boards, if you are running DDI Version 9 something, DX10 won't operate fully, so perhaps reverting to DX9 might be what we need to do. as soon as my DX10 is done updating I'll be back here to say how it goes.

I am running DDI 9Ex, I'll see how you go and then see if I should revert to DX9.

ok, updated DX10 crap, did nothing. What are the setting you are using in the CCC (Catalyst Control Center)?
