  • Error Code FFXI-4001

Frequently during gameplay I'm getting disconnected randomly from the server, and receiving the 4001 error message. The error message reads something like this...

    Error Code FFXI-4001
    No response from server.
    Connection Timed out.
    Press ok to shut down.

For the first week the disconnects were somewhat few and far between, but they've recently gotten so bad that the games become unplayable.

I use a wireless Linksys Router and believe it's the source of the problem. I've opened all the necessary ports, installed all the latest firmware and drivers, and have run the game directly from the cable line without any problems (so I'm sure the routers to blame here). I have the windows SP2 firewall disabled, and I've done the web chat help thing with Square-Enix and they were no help.

Just for the hell of it, here's my PC specs:

    WindowsXP Home SP2 (firewall disabled)
    Pentium4 2.66Ghz
    1GB RAM
    120GB HD Space
    128MB Geforce4MX

I'm out of ideas on what to do to fix this, so any help would be appreciated. I'd like to either have it fixed or have the account disabled before the next billing period (Feb 28th) so I don't get charged for an extra month, so please answer quickly. Thanks.

    Re: Error Code FFXI-4001

wired connection is always a better choice if u need a steady line; as u know by now, the only thing the wireless is better at is its convenience. also, the wireless connection isn't made w/ gaming in mind, where the steady connection is rather required.

    unless ur pc is located where it's physically impossible to have a wired connection, i strongly recommend u to have it wired to ur room. but reading ur post i assume that's out of the question, so here's other things u can try;

    1. what model of Linksys router r u using?

if u r using one of those "basic" ones, such as this, u might wanna try the advanced ones w/ increased coverage distance and/or speed.

    candidates include:

    D-Link DGL-4300
    Linksys WRT54GX4

note that in many cases, the wireless adaptor on ur pc's side must also be compatible w/ these added features in order to enable them. also, i'm assuming that u r in either US or Canada, so the product selection and availability will differ if u r outside NA.

    2. what wireless standard r u using? 802.11g, 802.11a, or 802.11b? (hereafter referred to as simply "g," "a," and "b." and if u r using MIMO (108Mbps), just disregard this part.)

while the most popular one used would be "g" these days, if u happen to be using "a," try swithcing to "g." "a" is the latest standard and uses the 5GHz range which is dedicated to wireless network in many countries, thus won't interfere w/ other 2.4GHz devices, such as phones or radios, as it would w/ "g" in some cases. however, "a" is weak to the physical interference, such as walls and doors in ur house, and those r things "g" is very strong against. however, if there is no physical interference, and the distance is the only concern, "a" is often better than "g."

note that "b" is not only slower, but also weak against those physical obstructions, so don't use it. also in some countries, using "a" outside of ur house is unlawful, so if u r using "a" try not to use it outdoors unless u've checked ur country's law governing the use of radio waves, and made sure that it's ok to do so.

    3. r u using "g" and at the same time some other equipments that use 2.4GHz range?

2.4GHz equipments include phones and radios, but in ordinary households the phone would be the first one to doubt about. using the 2.4GHz phone in the same house where "g" network exists means radio interference, and it could result in the temporary (though only for seconds) connection loss, and could cause the online game not to work. if this is the case, try using "a," or better yet, MIMO which has the better speed and more steady connection (in theory). of course, MIMO equipments cost more, but could prove to be worth ur money.

like i said, wired connection is always a better choice, but check and try these things and see if they help.

      Re: Error Code FFXI-4001

I had this very same issue for a very long time. I would get the error message once a day every day and then for a week straight I would get it ever five-fifteen minutes.

From all the testing I did I swore up and down that it was my router (Linksys B router). So we went and upgraded everything to G and poof! The problem went away. For six months had no problems, and then one day I was DC'd sixteen times in half an hour with that !@#$ error message.

It hasn't happened since then, which is about six months ago. It seems obvious to me that it isn't the router now (since it happened on two seperate routers, and inconsistantly at that), and ocassionally I still get redular DC's. Nothing like that error message, but I'll get DC'd three times in an hour, once every week. Never get that error message any more though.

Now, that being said, I have noticed that Wireless connection can affect FFXI adversely with wireless routers. The Linksys routers (frankly) suck ass. To the point is where I had Linksys themselves tell me the other day that my "router is broke, and there is nothing that can be done to fix it. Get a new router." That, btw, would be my brand new G router that is having port-forwarding issues.

Anyhow, it seems to me that any time the singal drops below a certain level (~25mbs) FFXI starts to spasm in high latency areas. A range extender/signal booster can fix this. My solution is getting a Netgear Router next week.

Also, certain ISPs have a proven track record of instability with regards to FFXI (it actually has to do with thier internatial line providers). In my case this is Comcast. Wire and Wireless alike, through the router or directly to the modem, about once every day to three days, ocassionally four times a day, Comcast Internet just doesn't like FFXI and connection is lost. Times like this a quick tracerout shows that certain line providers are having issues. Nothing can be done about this.

Another trick you can try if you have the Wireless G network cards from Linksys using the reference drivers from the RF chip manufacturer. When I was running Windows XP, I was having constant signal issues (and thus discconects). When I upgraded to Windows XP x64, I found that Linksys had no dirvers for the network card. So I popped open the cover on the network card, looked up the actual chip manufacturer, and downloaded -thier- drivers. Works a million times better than linksys' drivers. Like, twice the signal and stability.

      I'll stop babbeling now.
