Getting updates: install CoP?

I have the very first NA release version of FFXI and I will be installing it soon on this PC. This means I will have to update FFXI since it's release in North America. But I also have the CoP expansion disc.

My questions are, when I install FFXI should I update FFXI before installing CoP? Will it screw anything up if I install CoP before updating? And will installing them one after another help me avoid the several hours of updating FFXI?
