  • which router works the best

currently i have a netgear wireless router and it is always giving me connection problems. i kicks me off every 20 mins and i have to reestablish the connection. my friend had the same problem with the wireless router and then he switched to a hardwired one(not wirelss) and the connection was fine again. so i was thinking about buying a Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch
i was wondering what other people use to keep a steady connection or what router should i get that is releativley cheap like under $150 and will not loose connection.

Linksys is arguably the best consumer network product manufacture, so u shouldn't go wrong w/ that one. not to mention their BEFSR41 has been in market for several yrs, w/ very high, constant reputation.

wired connection is always a better choice when u r in need of a steady line. there r various factors that could negatively affect wireless connections, whether materials used for the walls of ur house/apartment, possible interference of radio wave by nearby facilities such as TV/radio stations, or maybe even someone is trying to "steal" ur connection. the only thing a wireless is better at is its convenience.

btw, CompUSA has that router on sale as we speak (till Nov 12), 10 bucks off right on the spot and another 10 w/ a mail-in rebate, coming down to 40 bucks a piece. u might wanna check it out if u live in US and have their store nearby.

Not to hijack your thread Breyden, but I have a relating question You see, I'm in the same boat you are with a wireless router, however I don't have the luxury of getting a wired router, and I must keep my wireless one. Thing is, my connection has been kicking me off within 1-2 minutes of logging in. Seeing as how I have to stay with my wireless router, is there anything I can do to prevent it from kicking me off like it has been? My only idea is to get a wireless repeater to strengthen the signal, but they cost upwards of $140 and I'd like to see if there are effective alternatives before going out and getting one. Maybe it's not the wireless connection that's kicking me off (although I'm almost certain it is).

This is the router that I use. It has both wired and wireless connections. This really helps out because our home is an old Victorian so wiring is an issue. This way we have it situated in our game room but yet if I want to go online downstairs with my laptop or my game console, I am able to. Not a single issue with this router wired or wireless. This is absolutely one of the best routers I have purchased and I've had more than a few! LOL

            that router looks promising.

Dark^Impact, if what u have right now is one of rather old ones, one way is to try one of these ones w/ added features. another candidate might be Linksys WRT54GX2, which claims to have up to twice the coverage distance.

besides, u should check the signal level u r getting right now, and if it's not maxed out, that could possibly be the reason for the loss of connection.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but after reading this I want to thank you, bside and The GrandMom ^^ I'll look into those routers and try them out. Just to comfirm, however, you said you use the DLink wireless gaming router to play FFXI, The GrandMom? You see, with my current router I'm able to play online with games such as Warcraft III and maintain a connection, it's just FFXI that I always get stuck on. I just want to confirm proof that the router does work well with FFXI specifically. Thanks again for all your help. I'm looking forward to being back in game soon :D

We occasionally play the PC version of FFXI via the wireless router. When I have to be downstairs watching my grandson mostly. Otherwise I am upstairs in the game room on the wired portion of the router playing FFXI.

Re: which router works the best

using a purely hardwired router is best if you need a completely reliable and steady connection.

i have both a linksys hardwired router and a linksys wireless router and i find that the communication latency between the wireless router and my pcs drops off majorly ever couple days or so.

thus, i have to reset my router by unplugging the power from it. i don't have to do any restarts with my cable modem and pcs and everything is usually reconnected in a few seconds.

(i have opted for a wireless router because i've got wireless enabled laptops operating in my household and four desktops. it'd kinda suck having to carry wires everywhere for laptops. since my mmorpg playing has dropped off like a rock, resetting my router because of latency issues isn't that much of an inconvenience to me.)

i can understand that this would be irritating as hell when you're in the middle of a party or hnm and your latency drops off because of your router. in mmorpgs, you NEED reliability in your connection over convenience.

you can get good linksys wired routers for less than a hundred bucks (u.s.). i think you'd be crazy to buy a wired router for anything more than that but if you want it, that's up to you.

if you're area often has thunderstorms then i suggest that you also go for some kind of extended warranty on your router. routers seem to be extremely susceptible to lightning damage no matter how slight the damage may or may not be. over the past 3 years, i've had to replace 3 routers because of lightning. and to that end, you'll also want lots and lots of surge protection. surge protection on your power, of course, but also on your cable line, and, if possible, on your cat5. i'm not sure if there's anyone out there that makes surge protectors for cat5 but it's worth a shot.
