What is the maximum resolution of FFXI with and without "hacks"?

What is the maximum resolution of FFXI using only what is provided by the game? Also, if it is under 1280 x 1024, can I run the game in windowed mode to prevent interpolation on my LCD monitor? Also, what is the maximum resolution of FFXI after "hacking" the game, or editting the settings in ways other than what the game provides you with?

1600x1200 with 1024x1024 background as far as I know without using registry edits. I have a Dell 2405fpw 24\" widescreen LCD and after the drivers were installed, 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 were also in the options. 1024x1024 background was still the highest by default.

I haven\'t tried setting the main resolution any higher through the registry, only my background res is 1920x1200, although I\'ve heard of people bringing it to 2400x2400.

I see. So if I set the (main) resolution of the game to 1280 x 1024 for the native resolution of my 17\" LCD monitor, would everything be displayed correctly and proportionately. For example, in some game if I set the resolution to a 5:4 resolution like 1280 x 1024 instead of a 4:3 resolution like 1280 x 960, some things get stretched and distorted from the 4:3 aspect ratio to the 5:4 aspect ratio. Would this happen with Final Fantasy XI? Also, is the background resolution 1024 x 1024 by default? If so, should I raise it through the registry edits?

It all depends on what your computer can handle. I'm sure there is no "limit" to registry hacks, per say, but just play around with it till you feel comfertable with the framerate.

1280x1024 will be displayed at 5:4. if you've always used this aspect ratio (for FFXI), then you won't notice anything wrong. I started playing FFXI on 4:3 ratio so my eyes seem to detect something is off.

Okay, so just to make sure: 1280 x 1024 does stretch the image to make it unproportional? Does this also mean widescreen resolutions stretch the image from side to side to fill the screen and make the image unproportionate? Thanks.

no. it will probably look fine to you if you start playing at 12x10. my eyes got too used to playing at a 4:3 ratio so it looks off to me.

the game has a aspect ratio slider so you can adjust as you see fit anyway.
