  • Patching FFXI from another location (copying patched files)

Hey all, a quick question for anyone who can help me.

I'm doing a fresh install of FFXI to PC, but I no longer have highspeed internet access.
So what I wanted to do was,
    1. install FFXI on my PC's harddrive. (it's a backup slaved drive)
    2. physically remove the drive and place it in my friend's system (installed as a slave)
    3. run FFXI from there and patch using his cable modem
    4. re-install the drive into my system and start playing via dialup.

Well I tried this and I ran into a problem, since the game was not installed on my friend's system, the reg keys for FFXI were not located in windows so POL and FFXI wouldn't run by just clicking "pol.exe" =P I had to reinstall at my friends house, and it's patching there right now.

What I'm wondering is how will I be able to transfer the drive back into my home system without having to reinstall FFXI? Can i run "regedit" and manually install the regkeys for FFXI so that windows will see that it's already installed? Or do I just copy the patched FFXI files to another drive, do a fresh install, then copy the patched folders back over the fresh install?

Sorry if this is confusing but any help would be appreciated, I'm really not trying to sit here on dialup for 3-4 days patching.

What you need to do is actually this:
1.) Install FFXI and ALL expansions using your CDs and install it on YOUR computer.
2.) After all install is complete, move the hard drive to your friend's computer.
3.) Copy his installed and patched FFXI directory and overwrite and replace all files in your FFXI directory with his.
4.) Move your hard drive back to your computer and start PlayOnline.
5.) Let the patches check the files, it will check all files and then skip the download and install segment of the patch and you can play. No download needed.

If your friend does not have FFXI installed, then you need to install and patch it on his computer overwriting your directory.

The other way is to export the registry keys and the re-import it, but that is also more dangerous and only works if both of you have similar Windows setup.

Thanks for the reply, what I had to do was reinstall FFXI on my computer then just copy the patched files over replacing everything and letting it check when I logged in.

copy the whole FFXI directory over. if you want to have your POL updated, copy that whole directory over as well (but POL updates are small and don't take that long).

          Thanks Yyg!
