  • English to Japanese - Japanese to English; Windows Auto-Translator

I know Microsoft has a program in Windows that often allows people to read webpages in their own language (ie. you bring up a webpage that is originally in Japanese but it can appear English to you if you've the proper translation files for that language). So, shouldn't it be possible they could design that same program to work with MMORPGs?

What are you talking about? If you mean the the Encoders that's just so that a website that's in Japanese it's characters will display in a Japanese form of Kanji, Hirigana, or Katana. Instead of a jumbled mess.

If you mean the IMEs that's just so that you can type in that language, for Japanese IME you still need to know the Romanji name or know how to put the character together still.

If you mean the Autotranslaters via Altavista that translates a webpage for you. Those can be very inaccurate and just be complete incoherent mess, this is what Square Enix wanted to avoid which is why they went with their version of the Auto-Translator. Still can come out as a mess to a degree but over all it's far better then having something Auto-Translate all the text a person just flat out puts.

The best still some wished for was that the NA version would of done Kanji, Hirigana, and Katana. That way they could use their own knowledge to compose a message or use it as a further learning tool.

I'm specifically talking of a program that has come with Windows OS's since 9x... I can't name the exact program though.

I think you're mistaken. What you're talking about is not an auto-translator, what you're talking about is the IME like Macht said. It allows you to input japanese text, as well as read.

Some websites just have multiple languages in their database. ffrecipe.com for example, you will see lan=en, lan=jp in its address

there are webbase translator that pretty much take a page and translate the entire thing and show it to you too. But man, these things usually takes some time and the translation are hard to understand.
