I can't get FFXI to work!

I've installed everything correctly and signed up and registered for everything. I start up FFXI everything is ok untill I click create character. After that it's just a blank screen with only music playing! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

does your system meet the requirements? did you update your graphics card drivers? did you install Direct X?
