EDIT :: 05/30/2003 :: attempted to fix the two links at the beginning of this post so that they are now pointing to the correct palces so others can now install japanese fonts. ~^_^~
I have copied Jei's guide back since it is so useful
OK first thing first. I think most of you guys here already know how to input Japanese language in PC
Please don't laugh at me hehe for teaching something so basic.
I do this tutorial mainly for fun. And hope it would be helpful for those who don't know how to do it yet :D
This guide is an additional tutorial about how to type Japanese and how to switch between them convinently
(my way hehe)
Before you can do that you will need to install them first. How to install has already been explained by Angler. I'll list the links below.
** this guide is based on winXP professional**
========================================
So let's get started. Before you can input Japanese character you need to have Japanese character installed in you windows system. Which you can find how to do it here (posted by Agler)
-> http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=898
Next you need to add the Japanese input mode to your services. Which is explained here (posted by Angler)
-> http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=952
OK so you installed and had them set up ready to use. You can use Left Alt + Shift to cycle through them but I find it a little confusing. Especially if you are playing FF XI full screen mode you won't be able to see what language you have at that moment.
So, you will want to assign a specific command to switch to a specific language easily at will.
Go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options
Click "Detail" in Language Bar

Click "Key Setting"

That opens up Advanced Key Settings. Look in the Action part you'll see list of languages saying "Switch to ...."
Here is where you assign a *specific* command to instantly switch to the languages you want.
Click on "Switch to Japanese ...." to select it, then click "Change Key Sequence". Assign a combination you like

As you see, I use left ALT+Shift for every language with the number assigned differently. 1 for thai, 2 for japanese and 3 for english. This way I can switch to that specific language right away by pressing different numbers!
Press OK all the way out and test it. you should see your language bar on the buttom right changing (in my case I have Thai language too)

That's how you set it. Now is how you type it
=====================================
Switch to Japanese input mode. You'll notice a capital A in it. If you don't see it, try drag your mouse to extend the language bar to the left.
That "A" tells you that if you type anything right now, you'll ended up having ordinary english aphabets.
To toggle the mode to input japanese character, press ALT+grave (the top left button in your keyboard which has ~ with it)
You will see the "A" change into a japanese letter

once you got that japanese letter, you are ready to input hiragana!
you do it by input the Romanji. The system will then transform them into Hiragana
** note. The system sometimes will not let you toggle it if you are not at a screen that you can type. You can surely toggle it when you're using notepad or reply form in your browser.
try it out by typing "kari". You will get a hiragana letter saying kari with an underline beneath it.

The underline is a unique function for japanese input system. it indicates the letters are still active
To finish typing, simply press Enter and the underline will be gone. You will have "kari" in hiragana.

To convert the hiragana into Kanji/Katakana don't press enter yet. Instead press Spacebar.
Press once, the systems autometically change to the default Kanji for that character.

if it is the out put you want, press Enter and the underline will be gone. If NOT, press Spacebare again and the system will give you a list of posible Kanji/Katakana for you to choose from.

You can press up+down arrow keys to cycle through them, or use your mouse to drag the bar up and down until you find the out put you want.
Once got the out put you want, press Enter again to get rid of the underline. And you're done for that letter! Hurray!!
you can now move on and input your next letter.

That's all the besics you need to input Japanese Text! Enjoy
