  • Re: Video Card and Screen Problems thread.

are or is there anything running in the background?

reason i say this is you are citing "it only happens when moving the camera or running"

your not going to usually notice a glitch like that standing outside your mh or at the ah so it could be happening more than you think..unless you always pay close attention when someone runs by or so on.

if your using windows make sure indexing service is turned off.. it kicks on and off randomly and can affect gameplay..

some firewalls can cause the issues as well.. check what time your firewalls/antivirus programs are set to download updates and run scans.. if they are set during your game time change times to around 30 minutes after you normally shut down/go ot bed.

another thing to do or try is put ffxi in windowed mode and when you start noticing the glitch (make sure your not in a position to get yourself killed) minimize it ctrl+alt+del to bring up system manager and hit your processes tab and find out whats running or starting up.

had a similar issue few months back and it took me a few tries to catch what was doing it and then a few more times verifying that process was the issue and tracked it down to another game through atari or something that was kicking on doing a system check and sending info to its server.. gamespy arcade type thing (i had not realized i had clicked yes on the share system info thing).

there are also several microsoft programs that are notorious about doing things like that..

    hopen that helps.

The network related optimizations that the graphics engine performs can cause that. essentially you're able to change your view faster then the engine is expecting you to, so there is a brief pause as it waits to get an updated list of objects to display.

If that is the only problem you're seeing, there isn't much you can do.

I appreciate the response Caramis. I don't have anything running in the background, started the game right after a restart. I have gone through and killed every service that was not necessary, and I do not run any firewalls, not even windows firewall, or defender.

I have noticed that the glitch is a constant, not only when I move. I see it when people move around me, and even on the intro screen where you see the "select character" button. I now see that it isn't even moving the cam, or running, I just thought it was because I was seeing it at those times since I was watching movement. Now I see that it is a glitch that happens every 2-3 seconds, and you can only tell when you look at anything that is moving. Even in my mog house. The best idea I had was my connection, but that is not the case because my roommate never has this problem whether he is the only one accessing the internet, or I am logged on at the same time.

I am completely lost at this point, and my OCD is keeping me from playing. I really can not stand that constant jerking on the screen, lol

Have you tried to resize you resolution? Turning on and off different effects in game? Some effects like weather effects don't play well with pc, and the setting don't transfer unless you saved them in char log in screen. Have you updated your drivers and direct x? doesn't hurt to check if there is something newly released.

My problem is my ingame gfx don't seem sharp or clear. I tried it on default settings and everything was as expected large, squat and not at all sharp,I then set the resolutions to 1920x1080 and background res to 1024x1024 and restarted it, the purple screen you get first had resized itself, lettering was sharper and clear, everything looked good. But when i get to the character select/create screen the lettering is back to being blurry and rough edged. When in character creation the toons were wider then should be and gfx looked almost 80's ish. Ingame was the same aswell. I went out and tried high textures, MIP Mapping, Smooth Effects with Bump Mapping, but none of this seems to change the ingame settings at all. Any ideas would be appreciated as i'm not all that tech savvy.

have you reset the aspect ratio in the game itself through the control panel?

default is set pretty low and i cant remember exactly what its set at but if your usin a larger monitor or a widescreen monitor you need to have the aspect changed to something like 16:9

Yes thank you, i found the aspect ration setting ingame and changed it now everything isn't so squat. Still trying to find out how to make the graphics sharper and clearer though, still seems abit rough and blurred.

                  Hi,

I have a problem regarding the screen freezing.

I haven't gotten far into the game yet, and this problem is really frustrating. Sometimes (most of the time / always), my screen will freeze for about 15+ seconds when I'm around those big monster cows outside Bastok. Furthermore, this problem will sometimes occur when monsters are casting something on me. I'm under the impression there is some sort of graphical stress or something. I also encountered this problem while fishing in town. I mean come on, seriously ? I don't think that's graphically demanding...

There is one common thing to all these though, but I highly doubt it's the cause... it's the gamepad vibration. I know right ? Why would something like this cause problems. I posted another thread regarding an issue with this as well.

My computer specs are way above the minimum requirement too, I'm running the game at max settings and all. Also I can play alot more recent games than this without any problems...

                  Well, thanks for any help.

Check your gpu drivers. FFXI doesn't play nice. You might need to upgrade or even downgrade drivers. I used a gamepad with my FFXI and never had an issue with vibration and graphical slowdown. You could also try adjusting your settings to see if that helps. Otherwise go into the menu and turn off animations, you won't see the effects of spells and such but it might help with the lag issue.

Are the "big monster cows" the Yagudo? To me they are more like huge turtles than cows...

If you are using Radeon anything above Catalyst driver 9.1 will give you that choppy gameplay. Like I said in another thread, other than that only version 10.3 has somewhat playable performance.

                        Thanks for the replies.

I have a NVidia GeForce 9800 GT graphic card. I had the problem a few days ago so I upgraded to the latest drivers, but the problem still remained. I also tried running the game with the lowest settings (ew, really crappy I don't wanna) and it also gave that problem.

Mom, I don't think they're Yagudos, they're Cows and Calfs with a [herd] number. (that's why I called them cows XD)

I'm gonna try and downgrade my drivers if that's possible and see if it solves anything.

                        EDIT:

Well, I think I solved a part of the mystery. You know, those cows stomp the ground so hard it makes your screen shake. I deactivated the footstep effects (under the Misc.2 options from the config) and my freezes stopped. So did my controller vibrating for that matters. I'm going to have to keep testing later when I have more time on some caster monsters see if it still does freezes.

Ok, I know this is off topic but are there new mobs outside of Bastok?? Cows and calves with a herd number? Anyone have a screenshot or something? lol (i.e. this is going to bug the hell out of me!)

Haha yeah ^^ the things from the event. I'm still a newb and don't know much about what's happening right now.

Also, I solved the problem. I completely deactivated the controller, and guess what. I'm not getting any more freezes. What the hell, yes ? Now I just need to resolve my controller issue I posted outside this thread and see if it really is the vibrations somehow affecting the whole thing <.<
