Re: Video Card and Screen Problems thread.

I recently started playing this game again, and have upgraded my computer extensively. I am having a problem where the sun causes my screen to flicker rapidly, even when it is under terrain (it was night time and I could see very fast flickering light below me), but it only flickers when the sun is in the direct view of my camera. Any idea what may be causing this?

Also, I saw a tutorial to set the background resolutions higher for the game... I changed both values to 800, and the game looked AMAZING... however, character models and items they were holding were randomly vanishing and reappearing on my screen. Is there any way to prevent this? I took the textures back down to the default 1024x1024... but I liked the higher res so much more.

    Current system specs:
    AMD 64 3500+ (Venice Core)
4 gigs of ram (I know, windows cant optimize it.... yet)
2x NVidia GeForce 7800 GT OC (SLI and updated drivers)
17" CRT Monitor (Native resolution 1280x1024)

Have you tried not running your video cards in SLI? Its not the reg hacks that is causing your problems, as I do them and do not have you problems you do.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Re: Video Card and Screen Problems thread.

The windmill glitch above I have no idea about, but as for the character polygons randomly glitching out at certain angles along with things on walls (such as banners) its caused by the precision nvidia cards are using for the z-buffer (controls the depth of polygons) This problem might be nVidia only but im not 100% sure.

        Ive been trying to find a way to force a 32 bit z-buffer and get rid of these glitches but so far I have had no luck on a 6800GT ; ;

As for the spell lag n stuff im pretty sure thats a nVidia only problem too, its caused by something that almost every driver rev is doing with the shaders in the game that display effects. Possibly the frame buffer or something like that. Square is "Investigating" it and has been forever....

It just cracks me up seeing nVidia *the way its meant to be played* on my box and then getting several different types of glitches *none of which have been fixed by nVidia or SE*

They need to start getting nVidia on the ball or stop putting the damn nV logo on their boxes and start supporting whatever company can display the game properly.

        Graphics glitches = ruined immersion

Re: Video Card and Screen Problems thread.

          I suppose this goes here:

I have a 7800GS bought it not too long ago, plays on my system very well with 1.5GB of RAM 2.66ghz P4 HT, nothing too fancy but FFXI works 1600x1200 2048x2048 resolutions w/ weather and full shadows on just fine in 95% of the time. But what I do notice is with *every* driver that supports the 7800GS (i've tried at least 5 different ones now) using a Firaga, certain abilties like Boost, and Asuran Fists, and *all* bard songs that are AOE bring my beastly 7800GS down to it's knees, i drop to the ballpark of ~7FPS while those are cast. FFXI is a *very* large part of my life, and I hate having to config so the effects aren't seen just so i can keep playing FFXI w/o going insane.

I used to have an NVIDIA, then an ATI, while I whole-heartedly agree that NVIDIA whoops ATI hardware wise they do, but ATI knows how to make drivers that *work*. I find it pathetically sad taht NVIDIA after over 2yrs of this (i had the *same* problem when FFXI first came out on my old NVIDIA card until i downgraded on it, which said downgraded drivers don't support the 7800GS) they still haven't learned how to fix it. I tried the beta drivers, I tried the new drivers, nothing works, the 77.72 drivers don't support the GS, only the GT apparently. If anybody is willing to help I'd be greatly appreciative, and most other 7800GS owners I'm sure will be as well.

Omokiron, your problem seems to hold true for the new 7900 GT also, which my friend recently got. He gets random POL.exe crashes when in game, and can't stay logged in more than a couple minutes on the most lucky of occasions. I think it may be systemic, as we tried turning about everything we could off. Any ideas anyone has would be helpful. o.O

Re: Video Card and Screen Problems thread.

Well, I thought it would be better to post here than to start a new thread. Especially since my question only illuminates how much of a noob I am about this sort of thing (see my vid card thread from yesterday).

So, new video card. I changed some of my settings (nothing in the registry, as I'm still not sure that 2048x2048 runs smoothly enough for me to be happy), but I really haven't made any drastic changes.

              Let's see. I have:

              Mip Mapping Enabled
              1280x1024 regular and background res
In Game and Map textures uncompressed
              Bump Mapping
              Smooth Environmental Animation

              Anti-Aliasing Off
              Antistropic Filtering x16
              Image Settings at High Quality

And I can't for the life of me figure out where to find out what drivers I have.

It's an Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT

Anyway, the game looks great. Except it's really dark in certain places. Entirely randomly too. Sometimes it's not really a problem (I don't mind a dark gamma), but then I get stuff like this in North Sandy, where there are random patches of what I guess it's supposed to look like in the midst of all this dark.

Any ideas what might be the problem?

I had that same problem with my 6800GS I had, just get the latest nvidia drivers. Thats what I did and I solved the problem.

murphie/aelathir, did you uninstall your old drivers before plugging in the new card? if you didn't, do that now and install the latest (approved) nvidia drivers.

                  Thanks Yyg!

Ah, ok. That makes a lot of sense (I didn't, because I'm not terribly smart with this stuff.) I'll do that and post my findings!

                    Double Post Edited:
Ok, I uninstalled the old drivers, and then installed the new ones. I'm still having that problem. I'm sure I'll figure this out eventually, but it's kind of making me crazy right now. I really need to bone up on this kind of stuff, because if something really goes wrong with my PC one day, I'm going to be SOL.

Re: Video Card and Screen Problems thread.

Here's my problem, hopefully some settings can solve it, i was running the latest "approved" nvidia drivers SE said and my game was running perfectly fine until *dun dun dun* a brd plays a song and BOOM, horrible unecessary lag, same goes w/ blm -ga spells, certain blu magic, mnk chi blast and boost etc etc, i wonder if anyone had that problem and knows how to solve it, cuz i had to roll back to my 66.93. And i think the latest approved ones were the 81.98, and i want to use those drivers again because i'm practically limited to playing FFXI and no other game cuz most newer games don't want to run w/o the latest nvidia drivers -_-

i have a GeForce 6800GT AGP, almost forgot to mention that.

sorry to inform you, but there are known (and confirmed) issues (lag) with some of the Geforce 6x00 series of cards that SE or Nvidia have yet to fix.

Are there any known SLI 7950 GX2 issues with FFXI? I am building a new system to handle that, (Core 2 Duo, 1066 fsb ddr2 1Gig Ram, etc.) Would like to know now so that I don't buy 2 video cards if I can't play. I know there will most likely be no signifant changes to ffxi when I do play.

My SLI ambition is mainly so that I can play half life 2, Team Fortress 2, F.E.A.R. and Prey. But... since I spend like 90% of the time on FFXI... therein lies my problem. Please let the suggestions and comments fly.

Hey guys, returning player with a new system here.

Whenever i try to enter FFXI i get a black screen or blank screen but the sound, mouse cursor, and mouse overs are fine. For example, i can move the mouse around, and even get sound effects for when i randomly hover over a button (a button which i cannot see since the screen is black).

here are my system specs. i need to know if i ought to revert my graphics drivers back even further than the suggested 88.13 for nvidia that it says to on the official FFXI website.

i have installed and reinstalled POL and FFXI but not the 2 expacs Chains and rise. that couldn't be it could it. I just want to get a picture!
