  • For everyone who has FFXI randomly crashing back to desktop on them, please reply.

Please reply with your machine config, gfx card and anything else that you think is relevant to pissible culprits.

I'm really disappointed that so many people seem to be having the same problem, yet I haven't come across any official recognition of the problem from Square. I've tried various gfx drivers, changed the speed of my machine and ram, and yet I still have the same problem, so I've come to the conclusion that it must be the game. But if enough people post their machine configuration, maybe we can see figure out if it is our machines or the game.

One more thing, by changing the background resolution to the default resolution, 512x512, all the crashes stopped. But as soon as I increase it to any other resolution, it starts crashing. But I cannot play at 512x512, because it looks rediculously bad.

    My machine config
    Abit BG7 w/ p4 1.6A oced to 1.96.
    512 samsung pc2700 ram.
    ATI Radeon 8500LE
    SGI 1600sw lcd.
    TB Santa Cruz sc.
    running winxp / sp1.

I have my machine overclocked, but I've clocked it at its default speed, and ffxi still crashed. And I've never had any other problems with overclocking so I really doubt that is the problem.

Please reply with your machine infos...

You have the latest directx? Also, how often does it kick you out? Is it a timed pattern, or just when things get "heavy" on screen? Be sure that you're running the game in the same resoution as your monitor screen.

There used to be a problem with AMD and directx 8.1 running together, kicking people out of Morrowind and a few others, but since you have a p4, I'm really not sure.

Your graphics card is meant for directx 8.1, so you might wanna consider rolling back to that if you're using 9 currently...

Mine drops at anywhere to 5 to 30 minutes online. i rarely get to play for 40 minutes or more. I can't repeat any of the situations in which it crashed and make it crash again. It also crashes without warning during all different situations: day, night, sandstorm, sunny day, combat, non-combat, travelling, standing still, etc... Oh, and the problem is not directx incompatibility. If a card supports dx 9, that just means it supports it in the hardware, making games that support dx 9 run faster on those cards than any other. But you need to have dx 9 on any machine, regardless of hardware, to play a lot of games right now. It's a bad idea to roll it back.

          It's been bothering m, too

          First, my system.

          Dual-Athlon 3000+ MP
1 gig Micron Registered RAM (in 2 512 meg DIMMS)
          Asus MPX motherboard
          GeForce FX 5900
dual Western Digital 8meg cache 80 gig hard drives (allowing for 8 gigs of swap space across two high-speed disks).
I abolutely have all the latest drivers/DirectX related jazz.

For a while I was playing Galaxies are higher resolutions. So I felt pretty confident that I could play FFXI without an issue.

Every so often, however, I get "the crash". And then I am treated to the annoying reminder that I need to log out of PlayOnline properly with Exit Viewer. Argh, I hate that. Some things I have noticed:

Right before I crash, I can hear the music stutter and repeat about 1 second's worth over and over, getting fainter and fainter each time. I also do not notice any Send/Receive loss beforehand.

50% of the crashes take place when there are suddenly many players on the screen. I make it a point to always visit the less-popular Auction House now, so those crashes happen less often. It should be noted that any time I run into a grouping of 25+ characters just standing around any part of town, I crash out.

The other 50% of my crashes take place at any given time, anywhere. I've crashed just running across the landscape. I've crashed when I knew I was the ONLY ONE in the area I was in (one of the smaller dungeons near Windhurst). I've crashed standing looking at a rock. There seems to be NO PATTERN to the non-player-intensive crashes.

Which leads me to believe that either:

          A) while the crash can be brought on by a lag overload, it can also be caused randomly

          B) the crash is brought on by another factor altogether, but that factor sometimes occurs during lag overloads

          C) the crash is caused by extreme lag, but sometimes that extreme lag is caused by events that I cannot see/observe on the screen.

          Thoughts?

            I'm playing Japanese PS2 Version

and I get the same problem as well...

It might not be the hardware nor the device driver (directX)

I think it is probably something else, like network setting, networkdelays, or some glinch with POL

I get crashed when I cast magic and active attack mode at same time.... (ie. use macro to case while use menu to active attack mode)

The game also crashes on my a lot. My system is as follows:

              Abit NF7-S Rev. 2 <Bios 1.4>
Athlon XP 1.4 Oced to 2.0ghz
              512mb pc 2700 ddr
              Radeon 9600 Pro <Omega Drivers Cat 3.7> Oced to 405 mhz :: 306 mhz

The game crashes on me at least once a day, sometimes a lot more. Sometimes after 3 minutes of play sometimes after 3 hours. I have called Square multiple times, and everything they tell me to do doesn't seem to help. Most of the time it seems like they just want to get me off the phone.

Hope they can fix this problem soon, they have a great game here and I know, they just need to deal with their customers better, and fix the bugs in there game.
It only hurts when I breathe...

I think I found an aspect that really can drive FFXI (or POL) crash

I am connection my Jap PS2 to an old DSL-Router, which I believe it doesn't release port, and leave some port forwarding to some internal IP, especially noticable after running it for few days.

I had my POL chatting, and FFXI crashed around every 20 minutes for 8~10 times the day before yesterday. Last night I just remind my old DSL modem issue, and I restart the modem. After that my FFXI runs very smoothly.

Because I'm using Jap PS2, and I get crashes, so I don't think the crash is very much related to the hardwares.

It seems POL doesn't handle the network properly on shared IP.

However, I guess this is just one of aspects that crashing FFXI (and POL)

                  Same here

                  Asus A7n8x Deluxe
                  2500+ OCd to 3200+
                  GF FX 5900
                  1 gig Dual Channel 3200

Now i am sure that the problem is not my system being overclocked, ive switched around the settings etc.

The fact that it crashes to the desktop leads me to believe that its a bug in the game thats incompaitable with perhaps certain hardware or maybe even programs.

I thought for awhile it was the fact that i owned a GF FX card and it was the drivers, but others with FX's seem to be ok.

Its pretty aggrivating, like someone said i rarely stay on over an hour, and some days it crashes like crazy, and cant stay on over a half hour.

I used to have problems with games randomly crashing on me when I used older drivers for my vidcard. When I upgraded, it stopped... but I'm sure everyone is probably using the latest drivers. Another thing you could try is disabling the microsoft messaging service. On my computer, at least, it would suck up 60% of my CPU resources every 2 minutes, even if just for a second. Maybe its enough to overload your computer? Its a long shot, but you can disable it by putting

                    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

in your Run bar from the Start menu. You could click ctr+alt+delete once, and see your tasks running and look for msmsgs.exe and see if theres a little blip in CPU usage every couple minutes.

i have the same problem. here's my stats:

                      AthlonXP 2700+
                      MSI K7N2 motherboard
                      2x 512mb pc3200 DDR (dual channel)
                      powercolor Geforce4 Ti 4200 8x agp 128mb
                      onboard sound
cheepo usb gamepad (just like ps2 gamepad)
plenty of HD space (i'm using less than 1/2 of my 200gb)

for me it doesn't happen very often, but it's very inconsistant. sometimes it will happen after about 30 minutes of play, however some nights i can play for 4-5 hours with no crashes. there seems to be nothing in particular that causes this to happen, it's just totally random. i could be killing monsters, in my mog house, in the middle of bidding at the AH, or even resting with no-one around. some days i have no crashes (not very often) other days i have 5+ crashes. during my first 3-4 days of playing i did not have a single crash.

well... i really hope they solve this soon... i've already died because of it once.... nothing is worse than logging in to see your corpse on the ground.

My POL randomly crashes to desktop and i figured out why. devldr32.exe appears in Taskmanager at the same time it goes to desktop. It's a creative driver and it's hard to get rid of. Anyone noticing the same process when POL closes to desktop please post results.

Bah its not the devldr32 prob. It seems i get a 100% cpu spike when it closes and have no idea why.

Well, I didn't get any crashes to desktop until I installed this PS controller to USB adaptor on my machine. Now I can crash anywhere from 15 minute to an hour. I really like playing with my PS2 controller, but if it means I can't stay in the game I guess it'll have to go. Anyone else noticed a correlation?
