I'm using a controller and it was doing the same thing. I tried to unplug the controller and it froze again but after rebooting with it unplugged I was fine to play for a good 5 hours.

the game would crash back to desktop before i even bought the ps2 USB adapter though it seems to have gotten progressively worse. at the moment its so bad i cant even make it as far as the character selection screen before it crashes to desktop or i get the blue screen of death. i just uninstalled the adapter and no improvement. Ive tried getting the newest drivers and direct x but also no improvement. some other posts suggested rolling back to later drivers and directx8, all of which ive tried but nothing seems to help. I tried running the game at the lowest possible resolution and it didn't affect the problem at all.I don't know. i've read every post on these forums concerning this problem and no solution that worked for others has worked for me.If you can offer anymore suggestions it would be appreciated. im now going to uninstall/reinstall the game for the... i've lost count how many times i've done this

        controller

I have had this same problem, crash clean to desktop after 1-45 minutes.

I unplugged my radio shack USB PSX adapter, rebooted, and now the game doesn't crash.

I'm using the drivers I found on radio shack's website. I'm about to try finding 3rd party drivers, or using windows default and see if they help.

          bladerunner,

I fixed my issue by using the default drivers that Win2k detected. They're not as robust and they don't activate rumble, but "oh well". I haven't had a crash yet. Just be sure to uninstall the crap drivers, reboot and let windows do the rest. Also, you'll have to resetup your FFXI settings for movement.

          Good luck!

            I am no longer crashing

I still use the radio shack drivers but in FFXI config I turned off rumble.

            Hope this helps you all

This doesn't surprise me a bit, but the funny thing is...I never crashed when the controller "rumbled".

                  weird..

I never had this problem (even with ps2 adapter) until I upgraded my RAM. I switched my 512mb corsair pc3200 Ram with 1024mb of Mushkin pc3500 last week and since then I get the crash at least once a day. I wonder if my new rams are bad?

Problem finally soved by the ever so wonderful support.

This is what they had to say:

I believe it is the onboard video with your memory. The onboard video does not work with DDR400 memory, you may need to downgrade your memory to ddr333. Also try the video driver and platform drivers from www.nvidia.com

I downgraded my memory and it works great now. i just played for 5 hours with my ps2 controller without it crashing at all.

So in order for the game not to crash...we have to downgrade our computers...? That seems kind of messed up if you ask me. But what do I know.

Wow! I reinstalled the game and it's not crashing anymore! It must have been the corrupted files when I accidently hit windows key. (I did it alot)

You can download a program called SiSoftware Sandra and it will tell you what kind of hardware you have in your computer and what upgrades can be done.

                            Here's the linkage

Well, I was tired of it crashing randomly, especially frequent when I'm in town, so I just bit the bullet and bought a nvidia 5900 to replace my radeon 8500 le. I've played for about a day so far, and haven't crashed, even when I've been in town, so I think it was just the graphics card and/or drivers.

I played with 0 crashes until I build my new box today. Now I get "the crash" many times an hour. I have a P4 2.6c with 512mb ddr400 dual channel corsair, radeon 9000 pro agp card (carry over from old box) and no controller.
