Who cares what people say they have?

As far as actually doing this, it works. Instead of increasing my back buffer, I actually decreased it because my laptop does not handle FFXI as well as I would have hoped. So instead of 512x512 which looks like ass, and instead of 1024x1024 which makes my videocard wheeze when weather effects kick in, I settled for in between with 768x768. Works perfectly for what I need.

As far as the whole textures issue, the quality will not be improved by increasing the back buffer since the game was written with 1024x1024 in mind, but aliasing issues will be lessened.

Wow! I didn't boost it all the way to the 2048 X 2048 setting, but when changed to 1280 X 1024, it made the game much sharper and clearer. The mouse is impossible to find now, but I'll get over that. Look at these two screenshots showing the image quality for my white mage:

The one above is my computer on 1024 X 768

The lower on is the new and improved WHM picture with the settings on 1280 X 1024. Don't know about you, but I can sure tell the difference from the two.

It's amazing how much better it looks. It doesn't look like it was converted from the PS2 version anymore. Thanks for the tip.

Can you put non standard resolutions aswell? I noticed you can have weird resolutions like 848 or whatever .

Its not really worth the performance hit really. Sure it looks all nice and runs respectably when solo but partying in a crowded Qufim cripples my comp.

I just added another pic please check it out

I use printscreen then go into paint and save file as jpg. from there. It actually looks better in game, but as good as I can get

I keep trying to explain this, BACKGROUND RESOLUTION is NOT MONITOR RESOLUTION. When you set it to 2048x2048 your monitor will not suddenly display at this resolution. So stop comparing it to your monitor resolution. As explained, it is simply the resolution at which the game RENDERS 3d polygons in MEMORY before it display the image.

How does this improve image quality? Simple. Open any image editor with two images taken on any decent digital camera. One at 640x480 and another at say, 1600x1200. Now, blow up the 640x480 image to 1280x1024 and shrink the 1600 one down to that res. Which image looks better? The one that was large and reduced.

You lose serious quality going from small renders to big ones just like small images to large.

And if you still doubt this process after all those screenshots I got nothing to say other than to try yourself. (You don't have to edit the registry, just use the config tool and check the difference between 256x256 and 1024x1024, it IS noticeable).

I just updated the pics. They look 100 times better. I used FRAPS to take the pics. The difference really shows.

A friend and I just bought an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB just for Final Fantasy, looking forward to being able to run some nice resolutions.

                              What difference?

Rychiar, what difference are you saying we should see. I went to your website and saw 5 completely different pictures of 5 completely different scenes. What are we supposed to be comparing?

I agree with the other person who said their isn't much going on here to comment on. The higher resolution NATURALLY looks better than lower resolution. Ancient history. However, I haven't seen any pics that show by changing background textures from 1024x1024 to 2048x2048 is any better. Can someone take a series of screenshots AT THE SAME RESOLUTION, but using different values for the background buffer to show this difference everyone claims to be seeing?

Anyone that has actually played the game can clearly see the difference in the pics I posted.

                                I added a 1024x1024 example pic and a 2048x2048 example pic.

The difference stands out so bad it is sad! Look for the pic titles in the album. Its like day and night. Look especially at the trees and grass in the background
