Im playing on 1280x1280 witha radeon 9000 128mb athelon 2600+ 512 ram and it runs like glass.

The only hicups I get are the occasional lag from the server but other thatnthat it looks great..

I'm having problems running ffxi smoothly. Here's my set up

P4 3.2 ghz 478 socket
2 gig ddr2
6800 BFG Ultra OC

I think my setting was 1280 x 1024 foreground, 1600 x 1600 background.
I'm getting horrible lag during dynamis & Lower Jeuno. Sometimes it gets bad with just a single party.

Any suggestions? I'm also thinking of building a new rig with SLI or waiting for that 7300 Nvidia chipset.

Ok. Pls let me know if my computer can handle this. I have a radeon X300 video-card, highest resolution my comp can run is 1600 X 1200, and my computer has 512mb of ram, is a pentium M, and the video ram is 128mb.

I dont lag at all ever unless Ive got stupid programs running stuff in the bag ground and then I dont think thats classes as "lag". Im running it at 1280x1280 BB and 1024x768[Looks really small otherwise I think] FB on a Radeon9800Pro. My Pc only has 2Ghz Processor and 512Mb RAM. Id admit its a piece of crap but it runs FFXI on those settings no bother so I mustve done something right. Dont have shadows on high tho. That does lag it.

ok im confused...

my last video card, 9800pro could handle 1600x1600 perfectly... but my new card, 6800gt oc, gets kinda laggy on 2048x2048...

shouldnt my new card handle that res just fine?

shouldnt my new card handle that res just fine?

Yes your system should handle it. Ive noticed that turning shadows to high does hog the cpu tremendously.

Im running at 2048x2048 with this set up

A64 X2 4200+
Corsair 512x2
Asus x850xt PE Pci-e
Raptor 72 gb 10.000 rpm

And it runs like water ^^

Why ATI > Nvidia. (for FFXI anyway)

I had an Nvidia card, put the latest drivers on it, game was messed up, Warp animations had a weird blocky effect, Carby was invisible, etc. Worked fine if I reverted to an old driver that SE recommends. Later got an ATI card. I've always been able to use the latest driver without any problems.

Just want to the OP, thanks for the info. Currently running at 1600x1600 and it looks great. I was able to run through a Beseiged with pretty much the same lag I usually get. So I'm quite thrilled with my new-look FF XI! ^^

Bah i need to fix my gfx card before i can try upping the resolution. Have a 9800pro 128mb, but the heatsink fans dead on it, pc tends to artifact after a while of messing with the resolution -.- New heatsink fan for graphics card please :D

Does anyone know a way to increase the drawing distance without using a windower? (I'll never install those programs on my computer)

Or maybe trying to make a petition (if there isnt one going on already) so they give us high-res 32bit textures, and more drawing distance.

Unfortunately, I doubt a petition would do much good. It sucks, because obviousy the potential is out there to improve the way the game looks (for PC users, at least), but they (SE) don't seem particularly interested in providing the option to us right now.

Frustrated why the game wont let you set background textures past 1024 x 1024?? Look below to set it even higher!! The game looks amazing running background resolutions of 2048 x 2048!!

Step 1:go to your run command and type REGEDIT and click ok.

Step 2: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then click on software.

Step 3: Click PlayOnlineUS and Square Enix folder, then the FinalFantasyXI tab.

Step 4: You should see 2 files 003 and 004. Double click and change the value on 003 to 800, and change 004 to 800. You will notice the values to the right after you click ok will change to the corresponding resolution.

2048 x 2048 = 800 and 800
1600 x 1600 = 640 and 640
1280 x 1280 = 500 and 500

***I am not responsible for problems this may cause by entering incorrect info! be sure to check to see if your hardware can handle these settings.****

I've known about this "tweak" for years. I've come to the conclusion that the best setting for the overlay would be identical to the game resolution. With the exception of running it under 1024x768. Then best overlay resolution would be double your screen resolution. (2048x1536 for 1024,768; 1600x1200 for 800x600, etc).

I run the game at either 1680x1050 or 1280x768, with the overlay resolution set identical. I usually run at the latter resolution incase I decide to record something with fraps. To be honest though they look the same really. The game uses low resolution textures to begin with. Improving the mipmapping setting is the best way to improve these. But the best way to improve appearence is just to set the game and overlay resolutions higher. Just as long as they match.
