  • Minimap / Realtime Map Positions

Question: Would it be possible to add a mini-map, similar to the ones used in the most recent Final Fantasy games, which updates character and party member positions in real time, or would it be possible to add this function to the map screen?

Re: Minimap / Realtime Map Positions

I'd rather have a radar that is a little more zoomed out. It is pretty worthless the way it is now (unless there is a way that I can zoom it out that I don't know about....in which case tell me!)

    Thanks for the sig, Selphiie!!

Seconded. I hardly ever use the radar/compass. A minimap would be really nice, even if it didn't have mob positions.

        the radar manages to be extra useless when you are engaged <.<;

nice being able to see the red dots but heaven forbid you want to dodge something while you are engaged.

How 'bout asking for a windowed version of the PC FFXI first? And then integrating plug ins or whatever for separate windows for map or minimap, and chat window? An official windower would be alot more useful first...

            Well, because I don't want a windower. I want a radar upgrade or a minimap/radar combination.

When I play the game, my computer's devoted to that purpose (of playing the game.) I don't have websites open in the background, don't have winamp playing tunes over the ingame music, don't have AIM on in the background, and so forth. Plus, usually when I play games that can be windowed or Alt-tabbed out of (Like Neverwinter Nights), the stability of the game is compromised. So I tend to keep it Vanilla-full-screen only.

So no, I'd rather keep my question as it is. Windowing isn't for me.

Re: Minimap / Realtime Map Positions

I would love to see something like this. It doesn't even have to be a mini-map, like people have suggested, just an upgrade on the Radar would be enough.

              1) Allow it to zoom out more
              2) Allow it to have arrows pointing towards party members when they're far away, like how it is when you have a monster tracked on Widescreen.
              3) Move it up near the S/R numbers so that it can be seen during combat.
              4) Allow customization of the Radar, so you make pick what you want it to show, Monsters, Tracks, Party Members. Etc
              5) And allowing you to choose which time you want shown, Game time or Real Time, or even both!

I think that would cover a lot of problems.

I'm just sayin'. Even just having the option of windowed or full would be cool. A windowed version would be great 'cuz if you have a big widescreen monitor you can have a super hi res window of your boy running around killing gobbos while you have your radar/map on the right which you can move around or resize or make transparent over your game.... Then you can have a separate window for your chat or menus or whatever. Having a minimap is nice but not if it gets in the way of seeing your character running around. You might as well use the /map. I dunno... I think the game has a bad GUI for the PC.

Only time I use the radar is when I pull, so it is kinda pointless. An upgrade to it would be very welcomed imo.

One thing I would like to know about the map however is how in the hell do you use the green markers on it? I know it's supposed to be used for NPCs, but I have no idea how to make it work. O.o

Re: Minimap / Realtime Map Positions

Funny you guys would say that the Radar/Compass is useless. It's been an extreem asset for me if I plan to avoid aggro, it's setup just right to were I squeeze through thin non-aggro openings between mobs. If they zoom it out it's going to be making that judgment on distance harder.

I personally love how that radar/compass is at as is. Not being able to see the mobs around you just makes sense if you are focused on the opponent in front of you. Say heaven forbid that you try to avoid aggro while fighting, heaven forbid that you have the sense to move and circle the enemy you are fighting so you can get a view of your surroundings while fighting.

Not that hard to do, especially if you are a RNG or similar job because you do that downtime between shots to move and look. Having a mini-map something like FFXII has would be a little more helpful, though it does present a space issue for the PS2 players. Screen is already crammed as it is, shove that in there and it's going to be even worse.

Don't know it seems it was intended for quest related stuff, but something about it is bugged. Found out it was bugged when I did the very first quest the game gives you of finding that NPC to give the adventurer certificate too. In San d'Oria I remember it messing that one up depending what race you choose for there. Can't remember the exact detail but it was something like if you were the right race for that nation it would give the green dot right and if you weren't it wouldn't give you the green dot on that first and seemingly only quest it does it on.

Otherwise finding NPCs I've always done with Wide Scan, for some reason Wide Scan is able to pick a larger range in towns. It gives you nearly every single NPC that exists in that zone. Only time I've had chances of it not, is if you are at a far corner of the zone and trying to find a mob in the exact opposite side.
