I personally enjoy emotes, they add depth to the characters, seeming more like real people and bring people closer to the vanadiel experience. So I would like to ask, is it possible that for every emote we have that we could associate a motion with it? This goes along the lines of the dancing emote thread, but what about the other emotes out there? Like smile, and grin, and a whole bunch of others i probably can't think of at the moment. Just thought it would be something to bring the experience to another level

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
Level 32s shouldn't try suggest on a game they have barely played. But that aside, /dance would be absolutely horrible. How exactly do you plan on seeing you /smile everytime you do it? Going to time yourself, hit /smile, and zoom in really fast?
If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Would be a horrible waste of "player-developer" connection. I don't see how anyone would care about having their characters lips move when they are usually facing their back. Simply, emotes are not meant to make someone look stupid(Hello thar /dance), they are simply shortcuts for basic messages like "I'm happy with you", "I'm sad", ect. /yes and /no make nod and shake your head, what more do you want?Read my blog.ffxibrp.livejournal.comCurrently: Entry #32, August 31/07.

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
If you want homo dance emotes you can head on back to World of Warcraft.
Smile and grin? What the hell? I don't think there's an emote that can accurately express my dismay at such a request.

Yo peeps, this is a suggestion forum, not lets slam down each persons idea. I don't see you making any suggestions, just killing ideas, you guys credit nothing to this effort and there need to lay off. Let SE handle what they think should and shouldn't go, they don't need your mouths. It's alright to correct and say something is not a good idea, it's different to slam the player. Don't hate

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
Thats not necessary dirtyclown, please leave it off the boards.
Personally I feel motion for emotes like smile and such don't really add anything. It would be too small of a motion to be of notice. Dance motions would be interesting, but Whitegate's AH is already laggy enough as is, not SE's fault, but everyone would be spamming the crap outta that motion and would prolly make it even worse. Not to say it wouldnt be something funny to watch every once in a while. Personally it would be more than a fair trade off if they gave a dance or one of the few other emotes that looks like a motion would be expected for them taking out a few altogether. Serioulsy, /muted, wtf is that? Stupidest emote ever.I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
Whoa, whoa, level 32 isn't exactly a freshly created question-mark character who didn't read up on the forums. He's experienced enough of the game to hold valid opinions about the workings of the game. Plus, if you look, his Subjob is BLM 39, so he's levelled past 30 twice, and may have other jobs higher.
But even if he WAS a question-mark new player, why shouldn't his opinion matter? Not every new player is one of those "lol this game sux" people that quits before level 5. Questions like "Why does this happen?" or "Why doesn't it work like this?" or "Why isn't there this thing?" are present no matter what level you are. I remember when I started, wondering why moving around didn't help me dodge attacks, or why enemies could run and cast magic, or hit us from 20 feet away, but we can't.
For people that care about the game enough to ask, why not allow the question?
About the Original Topic, I could see them adding motions for stuff like smile. It doesn't have to be just lip movement (because nobody would probably notice just that), but you could have a smiling 'pose,' where the body moves just a bit, arm placements, slight leg positioning, standing akimbo, and so forth.
Dance lacking a motion's always bothered me (and recently, the lack of Puppetmaster being able to do that pirouette dance with their puppet). However, I can see why they exclude it. Simply, people would do it. A lot. In towns, in dungeons, when you level up, when you use JA's, when you teleport, During battle downtime, sometimes during battle UPtime...

Legal Fish.
While you may disagree with the OP thats no need to attack his highest level as a reason he shouldn't have an opinion. Especially when you get his highest level wrong...
And unless i'm horribly mistaken, emotes aren't level dependant. I mean maybe if he was commenting on changes to Dynamis or gods you might have a point, but i'm guessing he's fully versed in the emotes.Kylestie was defeated by Curiosity.

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
I don't think there would be just a lips motion for an animated /smile graphic.
I can see my hume female joining her hands together and tilting her head to one side when she smiles. Similarly, I can see her giving a guy 'the nod' when she /grin's at him.
More than facial expressions, I think that's what the OP wanted animated.
To add new material, I would like it if /slap was animated. /comfort is, and it 'misses' often enough (ever seen an Elvaan comfort a Taru? Even when they're standing in the right place, the animation is so far off it's funny) people still use the emote. Nobody cared that it missed. nobody will care that /slap missed.
As a side note, if /angry looked more like giving the bird, it would make me happy. I'm pretty sure that's what's going on in the JP translation anyway.
Yes, it was inspired by the Simpsons
If you know how to download and use VRS, I am interested in being tutored.

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
I've said it before, Matrix Online had only 2 good things, the music and the emotes.
Things like kiss would promt the other player if they wanted to accept, after that both characters would kiss, same with handshakes, slaps and other things like that.
Now, although XI would look nice with those kind of things emotes like /dance would be a double edge sword, they could make the game look better, or they could make it look really crappy if they didn't do it well.
So, in my opinion unless they could implement this kind of emotes flawlessly maybe the Roleplay part should be kept 90% in your head and 10% what happens on the screen. But knowing SE I'm sure they would do a good job... as long as /dance isn't similar to /panicsigpic

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
While I think this is a perfectly valid request (seriously, attacking someone's level for making a suggestion re: emotes?), I don't think that there is anything really wrong with the emotes as they are.
As mentioned above, all that extra motion would cause already laggy areas to be laggier, plus, that's a lot of wasted development time and energy on such a small project. Beyond that, I'm really fond of the emotes we have, and I have gotten used to them as they are. The less awkward motions the better.
That said, good suggestion, and don't let a few grumpy folks deter you from making a suggestion that you're enthusiastic about.

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
I watched a taru do a macro emote dance and sing the milkshake song with the word taru added in. I was pretty much amused to say the least. It would be awesome if SE threw us a bone and let the robots have thier own line of emotes like dances similiar to the dancing robot in Aht Urgan Whitegate or something like that.sigpic

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
Actually lag really wouldn't be an issue here, all the character visuals are already on your computer. The only thing that gets transfered is the posisition of the character. The /bow and everything is stored on your comp, that's why you can edit it using Altana Veiw. it wouldn't cause any additional lag.

Re: If it's an emote, it need a motion
"Hi, my progress in FFXI has been very small so far. The only 'limit' quest I've ever done has been subjob. I probably have done less 4 missions and its doubtable I've done many quests. I've killed only very few NMs and seen only a portion of the game areas. Because of my lack of knowledge of the game, I believe I should speak directly to the company about one of the few things I do know at this time, emotes. Everyone in this game should find emotes important at all stages of the game, simply because I do now. I want to push down threads dealing with "Chocobo Digging being hurt" and "Defense and VIT stats are broken" and have my thread about emotes be on top, so the Devs can add a feature where my character's facial expression will change when I type /smile. Also, my roleplayer group is having a hard time roleplaying a high-school dance, so we really want /dance. Like I said, as equal to a thread about Chocobo Digging being nerfed and PLDs main stats not worth much"Read my blog.ffxibrp.livejournal.comCurrently: Entry #32, August 31/07.
