Yeah, best thing I could think to accomidate that. It would fit to the "Magic: The Gathering" style of enhancing their older cards is augmenters. It's about one of the few things that FF doesn't have in common with EQ, but it's a design idea they could take out of their FFVII with Materia.
Certain equipment given set aug slots and then various materia that would augment that gear in different ways. So for example say E-Bow has 3 aug slots able to accept Fire, Wind, Thunder. Then have augmenters you get from specific fights, quests, missions for example for the fire slot be Fire Materia, Fira Materia, Firaga Materia. Then say you place Fire in there then STR goes 2~3, Fira then STR goes 2~4, Firaga and goes 2~5 & Fire element +5.
Be a way to adjust gear so it can improve, either that or really steal from EQ and do those leveling gears. With exp gained it takes a portion of it and to next levels as well, when they reach it the weapons stats (including level to use) go up to something new.
