    Re: Improving Auto-Translate?

    I've managed to use the AT very well, not perfectly but most of the time I can get my point across quickly to the Japanese players I party with. What I've always wondered is why didn't they just have the game automatically translate what you type depending on which version of the game you have.

    For example, if I said "Let's go camp over in that corner.", the people with the English version of the game would see it in English and the Japanese would see it in Japanese.

    I'm no programmer so I don't know how difficult it would be to do. It would be easier on the player base to communicate with each other for strategies and maybe even a bit of social chatter.

      What you want is not so much a programer, but a linguist.

      Making a sentence that's worded too specific is worthless 99% of the time, while wording it too broadly gives confusion.

      What you want are sentences/phrases that are not confusing, yet modifiable. And for those you would need a specialist or at least someone who has studied it(while also being fluent in said languages-best case).

      Kind of like how a real survey needs to have their questions screened through a psychoanalyst. "Do you think an ipod is expensive" vs "Do you think an ipod is worth its price", give very different results.

        Re: Improving Auto-Translate?

        I can understand the difficulty in making a full translator library of words, phrases, or sentences, so I have no problem in that sense for what we have. we just have to think some and be creative like meat shield for tank.

        My one problem is items and notorious monsters. Recently I've been wanting to hunt for the Valkyrie Mask. It'd be 1000 times easier to get help or a companion if I could just put that item or that NM in my /shout. Instead, I can only get help from NA players or people who know English because I have not figured out a way to use AT to get that point across.

          I think monster names are the same on JP.

          When I imported before the NA release, the monster names were in english.

          I could be mistaken, but I remember seeing "Hare" and "Sheep" out of San'doria.

            There are definitely some things missing from auto-translate....

              Yeah, you have a point about it being difficult. The added problem of netspeak and leet speak would be a headache at best for someone like that. I should probably stop watching the Space channel before I post in a thread like this.

                More auto-translator words

                Okay, they finally added You're welcome after 3 years, but I know there are still others that could be used often enough to warrant putting them in.

                My suggestions:
                Minute(s) Hour, etc. Nice if I could convey that I need to take a 5 {minute} {break} to non english speakers in my party. I know most JP know what afk and brb mean, but some way to make it a little more specific would be nice.
                Subjob. This one I'm unsure about since I don't know if {sub}{job} means the same thing in JP, or if its like {May}{bee}.

                Anyone else have any?

                  Re: More auto-translator words

                  Honestly the best way i can see to do this is to keep it going as an ongoing thing with each update. They must get loads of ideas for new phrases, just adding say 5 of the most popular requests with each update (along with the normal new words covering new features) would mean in no time we'd have a much more useable autotranslator.

                    Re: More auto-translator words

                    I asked a similar, but slightly different question, so here's a suggestion from me for autotranslate ^^

                    http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/ask...tml#post615109

                    As for suggestions for words, here goes:

                    - A dedicated term for 'pulling' or 'fetching' a monster for a party to defeat.
                    - {Stand Here}
                    - expanding {Buy?} and {Sell?} to {Would you like to buy?}, etc.
                    - {Teleport} , as in, a general term, not specifically Holla, Dem, and so on.
                    - {Enmity}
                    - {Magic Burst}
                    Wevrain - Shiva

                      Re: More auto-translator words

                      Sorry to inflate your bubble, but Minute and Hour have been in the Auto-Translator for a while now. As for {Sub} {Job}, that translates pretty straightforward, so we don't have any need for that. Shand Here I could see usefulness for, and {Would you like to buy} just takes up space. Pulling and Magic Burst would be nice, but most everyone understands what {skillchain}{magic} means. No need to add Pulling, because everyone uses Fishing and if SE did add it, I doubt it would make a diffrence, like Reward and Reward:

                        Re: More auto-translator words

                        I was in a party the other night where we had a Japanese NIN tank, and everyone else was English speaking.

                        The THF wasn't able to SATA because the NIN would stay too far away from the mob. We tried everything to communicate that we needed him to stand closer to the mob. I ended up saying this:

                        Tank1<...............>Mob {No Thanks} Tank1<...>Mob {Yes, Please}

                        Could we possibly have the following added please:

                        {Closer}
                        {Further}
                        {Stand}

                          Re: More auto-translator words

                          New Auto-Translator words and phrases on a regular update basis sounds good. Is {level} even in there yet? I'm glad SE finally added {You're welcome.} I and others (English- and Japanese-speakers) have made good use of it!

                          I have enough trouble with the translator that I end up with some Frankenstein'ed sentences with romaji and {auto-translator} when I'm talking to JP players.

                          Come to think of it, is {auto-translator} in there....?

                            Sorry PTT, I went through the whole forum last night looking for another one, but must have missed it, it was late.
