As a career Thief - and friends with many lvl 75 and low level Thief players - I've often been given very disparaging news from them and also from my own experiences...
Much how - our only role later on is as a Treasure Hunter Whore, that there is little to no content that Thieves excel at in party play. Our damage to Notorious Monsters is weak, and our hate control abilities are surpassed by other jobs - who also have vastly superior damage dealing talents - the only realm which remains a Thf speciality is loot and treasure, and something which the job is pigeonholed into, and get's to enjoy a spiffing 1% of many fights.
My real question is:
What is Square Enix's vision for Thief in the future? What is the role that Square Enix intends the Thief job to play in Experience Point parties (levelling up), End Game Party's (meripo), and High Notorious Monster fights?
There are however some clarifications within this vision:
1: Is SE aware - that their projected plan for the Thf's 2hrs (Perfect Dodge) will still be a redundant special ability. As I'll explain in a little depth later on in this post - standing behind many HNM's is a bad thing; for solo a Thf is rarely behind his opposition; and in party's when all chaos breaks loose (2hr time), the monster in question usually isn't standing facing the other way.
2: Does SE have any plans to create BCNM and ENM content which a Thf is ideal as a party member to have. So far - I've found very very few missions/quests/BCNM's/ENM's/battles where a Thf is ideal to have. The occasions where people think: "Hmm - we need a Thf for this are few and far between."... (other than for getting them limit break items, coffer keys, and anything where TH2 is involved).
3: On the note of fulfilling roles given to us: will Treasure Hunter ever be meritable? I ask purely - as it is what Thief is portrayed as by both SE and the player base - as a TH whore.
4: Finally - Is SE aware - that in many fights (including CoP missions), that Thf is effectively neutered by the Spike Flail ability that *begins* with the 4-2 Ouryu Mission - which is a 50 cap mission and goes from there? Any mob with this move effectively removes any need for a Thief other than Treasure Hunter. Does SE have any plans to rework SATA (Sneak Attack/Trick Attack) to allow for the Thief job to have functionality in these roles? I realise at 60, the Thf class gets Assassin which improves Trick Attack - however, every other job gets access to Trick Attack at that level and can put out as much damage via weaponskills as a Thief using TA + WS and far greater damage over time and damage vs mob tp gained.
I realise it's more than just a simple - yes or no question - but, unless I level another job, my CoP progress gets halted, I can't do damage on HNM's and post 60 - every job can do the things I do in Exp, only with better results - my only saving grace - is Treasure Hunter.
