  • Pet jobs and endgame

I'm posting this mostly for future reference when Questions are going to ever be submitted to SE again.

A lot of things have been adjusted in regards to BST, PUP, SMN and DRG over the last year, but regardless of all this, these jobs are not always welcomed in FFXI "endgame" content. In fact, some of these jobs are actively discouraged from it on a regular basis. I even know of endgame LSes that turn away Summoners and discourage them from coming to events, which I cannot comprehend.

What plans does SE have to improve pet jobs to make them more welcomed in endgame content? These jobs generally work harder than many to get to 75 and only to find out that other jobs are more preferred or that they'll never get to be these jobs in high level content at all, which is rather disheartening.

Note: Guys, for the love of all that is sacred, don't turn this into the "What's wrong with SMN" topic, we've had plenty of them. Go beat that dead horse on the SMN forum. If you must, must, must beat the dead horse, at least include the other pet jobs in your discussion.

Just as a point of reference. I recently had a BST friend told by thier LS leader they are never to be seen in Sky as BST, ever. Thier reason is that they don't want members thinking they can show up as a pet job to events. Funny since the leader of this LS will look for any excuse to pull out his THF, but I digress. He has a really snotty outlook on pet jobs. I mean, really, what jobs are more capable of sponsoring KS 99s than the ones most capable of soloing?

That would be BST, PUP, DRG, SMN and BLM for the most part. They're they ones that solo most commonly, anyway, and four of them have pets. BSTs are commonly used to manage link mobs for pop NMs like Hakutaku or Alastor Antlion. PUP and DRG do all right in Salavage, most of these jobs are no slouch in Limbus or Dynamis, either.

The problem isn't completely perception, though, some of these jobs aren't given roles for endgame beyond the one-dimensional DD or healer roles.

But really, pet job players work as hard - if not harder - to get to 75 than the rest of the jobs out there. Its a slap in the face enough to endure all the myth and lack of invites on a job like BST and then not be welcomed in most endgame content when you hit the end of the road. Even worse is to be made to endure a job you enjoy far less just to supplant your pet job.

I mean really, it took me forever just to find one job on my Tarutaru I liked more than BST to take it to endgame and I'm levelling RDM on the side just to throw my 75 BRD's power in check so I can consistantly go RDM or SCH instead. I love SCH and like RDM OK, but that's an awfully political thing to have to do.

But here I am doing it because I know if I just put BRD and BST down on an endgame shell app, BST would NEVER be seen or welcomed and I'd just be using BRD to get stuff I wanted for BST. BRD is just too powerful and desired in endgame shells, everyone wants one, no one wants to be it. I hate it at endgame, it bores me to tears. Its pretty clear why no one wants to be one at endgame, even though everyone wants one. I just realized it three years before most people did and quit.

Still, while I accept my BST will likely never set foot in most endgame content, that shouldn't mean I have to like that fact. What about the players that might only level pet jobs? Just like some people focus on mage jobs, or others focus on melee, there are people that play pet jobs just because they like them.

At any rate, something needs to be done to make these jobs more welcomed. This is one of those cases where the much-vaunted flexibility of FFXI becomes its own bane.

Endgame wise if someone bitches about smn, you need to quit the game now.

Yeah, I know, it struck me as very odd, but I have actually heard it said.

Move to Quetz server. One of my BST friends did, they have a Pet only LS that has done just about every endgame event. Pets only. Mostly BSTs and SMNs. This includes all of the HNMs.

          Re: Pet jobs and endgame

I have to say I have just seen my entire view on my 75DRG laid out for all to see in the elaborate words that escaped me when I tried to express them.

I took DRG to 72 and I could not get a party to save my life. I spent countless hours soloing only to have some run of bad luck and die, losing a significant chunk of what I has just earned. Mind you this was after they gimped us DRG from being able to sub SAM and go haywire on things with Penta Thrust, but before any other enhancements. I.e. 2hr=Wyvern (Which btw I agree was overpowering, but fun nonetheless.)

I ended up doing the political route and hit 75 on my WHM before ever seeing 75 on my DRG, the job I love sooo much. I find it sad since pet jobs are grosssly underestimated. I tried on numerous occasions to stress the fact that if I came even close to parsing the same damage, then I was far more valuable then that job as a DD. They refused to take into consideration the actual amount of damage/support these pets can add.

In a parser that was done to prove my point, I did roughly 23% of the melee dmg with my wyvern adding to that 12%. That totals 35% with 1 of the 6 jobs in the pt. Now you tell me that's not a significant contribution to a party.

A good friend of mine's BST pet can dish out some helathy damage and, on occasion, has served as a meat shield while we recovered. You tell me another job that can do that. (Aside from these pet jobs we are discussing lol)

SMN, BST, DRG, and PUP need to be given their proper dues, but the first time we start to get them someone jumps in with the comment : "Well your nothing without your pet"

This is not true. They are a big part, but aside from SMN the other 3 can do decent by themselves until their pet is able to be resummoned. SMN has some of the greatest end game pet contributions. Garuda and Diabolos make Kirin cry lol.

BST is underutilized for it's crowd-control potential and Mob Distraction capabilities. I saw a BST damn near solo Adamantoise. DRG can offer so many things to a party. Back-up healing, extra damage input, and zerg preparation. (Angon).

While I don't know much about PUP I do have a HL friend who is one and at 70 his BLM pet got all the end game BLM spells. That's 5 levels before even a BLM. I can just imagine the potential for that in end game scenarios, but sadly I have never, not even once, see a PUP in sky or sea.

I can't possibly think of anything that hasn't already been said before to rectify this, but something needs to be done. Too many of us that have these jobs have gone above and beyond to prove our worth only to be overlooked from generalities. SE Help~!

            Re: Pet jobs and endgame

            There's nothing SE can do.

There will always be the mentality that causes people to completely ignore the pet. Never mind that BST's LifedrinkerLars can hit as hard as the DRK and twice as fast; or that PUP's White Turban Automation can spam Cure V and -na's with a HUGE MP pool and when its out of MP just release and recall; or that DRG's Wyvern can do almost have another WS to the enemy every time the DRG does its damage; and SMN's group buffs out the ass. (These just being an example.)

All people pay attention is BST's Axe damage, PUP's Hand-to-Hand Damage, DRG's Spear damage (which is actually pretty good), and SMN's curing. I'm not sure what SE could do to make pet jobs wanted other than making them way overpowered (some say they are already). Maybe let BST call beast KirinFamiliar, let PUP's black mage auto use Death, DRG's wyvern use petrify-breath (permanent petrify of course), and SMN call Bahamut that is as strong as the one you find in the quest? For some reason I highly doubt SE will let you do these.
