  • When will SE get to grips with FFXI Update procedures?

This has been a sore topic on many an occasion, but it rears its ugly head again. There are others who are encountering this same problem, but I will include only my own results for the sake of simplicity.

I have 2 separate accounts, one I use for my mules and the other for my mains. The accounts are on two separate PCs, both connected to the same internal network and accessing internet via the same broadband router. Both are running on windows and both have FFXI with all expansion packs installed.

One of the two machines finally managed to luck out in downloading the latest update after only 22 hours of re-tries. The second machine is still SOL after over 36 hours.

We, the player base, have suffered the download problems for several years - there are many that remember the debacle caused a few years ago with the 3, 4 or even 5 days delay in being able to access the downloads. It seems that things have not improved. While only a player in this game, I am also network savvy, so while the following is conjecture, it is based on experience.

When my first box updated, it finally managed to snag the update file from the server and do the file check. Once the update started, it completed in under 20 minutes (I have a very fast connection). I copied all the files to the second box, but it still can't get into FFXI because it needs the latest update file. I consistently get the now-infamous POL-1161 error. Please, before anyone posts any "good advice". I've tried it already.

My instincts tell me that the "latest version information" files are not sitting on a server, but probably on a PC with restricted network connections - a typical networked Windows PC will only permit 10 simultaneous connections. There may be another reason for the problem, but whatever it is, it needs to go away!

When will SE get to the point where updates can be downloaded by registered, paying members in a timely fashion, without all these unnecessary delays?
After all, we pay for the service whether it is available or not.

Answer is probably... in their next "big" MMO.

With WoW and other MMOs coming out after FFXI, SE hopefully learned a lot.

Actually, I've found that transferring via my private LAN is much, much faster than transferring from the server. When I was installing FFXI onto my new laptop, I was having a lot of problems with new expansions not registering.

However, I found that if I transferred every single file from my desktop to the laptop, all the updates were found. If you set up a local FTP server, with the right FTP client, it will skip files that aren't different (are the same filesize), so you won't have to wait however many hours to transfer every file.

Plus, it keeps the macro sets the same on both computers too, which is never a bad thing.

Because every other MMO has perfect patches and updates every time.

People are going to bitch no matter what SE does.

          Never.

There will ALWAYS be problems. Too many factors to take into account. It's just the way it is.

It's kinda like asking if Microsoft will ever release a perfect "Windows Operating System" since you know, they've been doing it for over 15 years?

EDIT: Ohhh hi Catrin! Manasha has been telling me about your "adventures" over there. One thing I'd like to say, LOL SIVIARD (and his fucking piss poor attempts at getting a Guttler)
