This idea has been brought up in numerous forms over the last 3 years or so. SE has never made any steps to improve the game technology (other then the 360 tweak Feba mentioned) and they probably never will.

It's the standard for MMOs overall though. From what I've seen, it's rare for an MMO to overhaul their engine on an existing franchise when they can just start a new franchise and make money off of both. (see: EQ & EQ2)

Until the number of FFXI users who access the game via the PS2 becomes a smaller group, that is unlikely to happen.

aw. you're right though. in japan, the ps3 doesnt really have waning popularity that it has here in america, so i'm sure they're satisfied with the ps3 support of the ffxi ps2. they won't have that problem of ps3's that don't have backward compatibility.

Just to be an asshole, EQ IS the franchise. They're making a new game in the franchise.

Really though, the only good thing to come out of EQ2 was /pizza.

And it is rare, but it's also more than possible. Heck, look at EVE Online, not only are they upgrading their DX8 engine to DX10, they're also making ports for Linux and Mac. If SE put that much love into FFXI, I'd subscribe until the end of the game out of principle.

There's a new PS2 compilation coming with Wing's release. Buy that, download the PS2 HDD from the PSN and you're golden.

Well great, now I had to register for this.

...I was going to anyway, but meh.

If you go to Sony's site, you will notice that when you search FFXI on the 80GB compatibility list, it says that during installation, it'll hang. For CoP and ToAU:

Due to issues with the installation of Final Fantasy XI, the user is unable to play this title.

In Layman's terms: FFXI is unplayable on the 80GB PS3. This is a problem, as not only are the old-model PS2s not being made, but the only PS3s that can run FFXI aren't being made either. The 60GB PS3s are still around, but they won't be forever.

I'm actually going to ask a seperate question on this forum because of this.
