What do you think of my idea for how the merit system could be improved?

<- merits in nyzule island bhaf thickets on its for 22k/hr. We do fight them, and they will drop below it, if the job lvl increases. Some party set ups far better in Mire, with the VT's. And merit really comes in 2 flavors, TP burn and Manaburn, for quickness.

The only real change I see that the merit system needs is the ability to roll back and keep merit points instead of losing them.

Given the way mp normally goes up I'd have to say it's closer to 2, but the idea isn't to be a dick about it, simply to keep the estimated strength calculation accurate.
Possibly, but you obviously missed the part where I said he was a monk meriting mp to make levelling a whm easier. 50mp definitely isn't equivalent to one level of levelling monk.
Even if he were say, rdm, falling behind in mnd, int, enfeebling magic etc would soon lead to him struggling in a merit situation.

Same for melees, put your merits into physical stats such as str and you're going to suffer because your acc is relatively lower as your weapon skills aren't going up with the mobs evasion.

Re: What do you think of my idea for how the merit system could be improved?

I always found the nice thing about hitting 75 was that I no longer had to worry about level gaps. But with this I wouldn't be able to party with much of my LS with my 20 or so merits.

One guy in my LS is fully merited on 8 jobs. How many other people would he even be able to party with? I'm sure there are a number of people he could, but odds of them being on and wanting to party at the time he is, is not very probable.

I personally don't find fault with TP burns or Mana burns. People found something they can do effeciently, and now people says it's broken. But it's not stopping anyone from making a standard party and exping/meriting. Before ToAU there wasn't many areas that could be TP-burned. I think fast easy exp was part of the ToAU design. To allow people that have been playing for years a chance to just take it easy for a while. Perhaps the game was designed to be a little too time demanding, and SE saw to resolve that.

I think the flaw with TP burn mentality is that of the people. They forget Skill Chains and other strategys that are effective in other things like HNMs, Gods, Dyna, Limbus et cetera. But thats not SE's fault, but rather that of the players who chose to play that way.

I can't think of a way of implementing this without hurting a lot of people who want to merit but can't because not enough 75s, 80's or 85's arn't seeking. I like being able to /sea all 75 inv and finding 5 other people to party with, without making one single note about level gaps.

Either that, or the ability to buy more merits than the category cap and set up which ones you want to use with a system similar to blue magic.

But something should definitely be done to address the issue of some merits being useless or counterproductive for players with more than one level 75 job, because there is a rapidly increasing number of players in that category (just as merits themselves were introduced in response to the increasing number of players that had reached 75 in one job). Jobs with multiple weapon types (WAR, DRK, RNG) would benefit too.

Um..... why? (I'm said this in your other thread too)

I can't think of a single reason why SE should add this. It's not even "fun" or "cool". You can make 75 armor hard to get/wear without merits. Look at Salvage, a perfect example.

And I thought this thread was going to be about fixing those few useless merit choices.

Re: What do you think of my idea for how the merit system could be improved?

Alright skimmed this one quickly. Partly because I have to agree that these group of questions are a bit annoying. The other issues is I noticed that all of these ideas if they were to be implimented completly detaches the synergy and structure of this game.

Making fake levels is not neccisary (ex: 75 +1, 75 +2, 75 +3) for this game.

If you want to make specialized merited gear then you can just flat out make a merit classification to do this. It would be something like:
                • Blast Shields (PLD Only): Enables you to equip special Blast classified shields.
                • Sonic Arrows (RNG Only): Allows you to equip special Sonic grade arrows.

So on and so forth, making a fake level to do this is not needed. You can even generallize it more and make merit saying PLD Tier 1 merit equipment, that allows a PLD to equip items that are tier 1 merit equipment.

For creating special quests enforced by merit you can just have the tally up what merits the player has and if they are past a certain number allows them to do. Still no fake level is needed here. The concept of this fake level would only serve to confuse and be a very pointless way to establish a status symbol.

If I really wanted to make some status symbol I would preffer something more graphical that stands out. I mean an aura presence or something. The idea isn't entirely bad, but these head-in-the-cloud type brainstorms kind of seem pointless. Need better detail to describe your ideas and possibly show how they create synergy with the other ideas.
