Some people were chatting about this on ARR today, saying that SoE is going to shut the game down by the end of next year. Haven't been able to run up anything about this myself however on Google.
lock/delete. Don't really care either since I don't play and have no plans on going back, was just curious (especially since apparently like 90% of the population has left the game out of rage/frustration with the devs, or so the forums claim).
I still hop on FFXI from time to time; Valefor...while not being a populated server for some years now, is certainly worse than before. I'm not going to comment on whether FFXI is dying, or if the servers will be shut down next year (doubtful considering a new expansion just released earlier this year) but for reference, peak time on Valefor consists of roughly 420~500 people. Tonight I logged on briefly to chat with an old friend and a /sea all included 427 people around 8PM CST. Last Friday, I logged on very briefly to tell a friend what server I was playing FFXIV on, and there was about 489 people.
I suppose the saddest thing I've seen tonight was there were 2 people in Abyssea La Theine at peak time and the guy forming a group for worms shouted for about 45 minutes (no joke either, I was in West Adoulin afking partially while people ringed on the doorbell for Halloween) and he still only had 5/18 people. Now you can of course make the argument that it's 2013 and most people probably burned every job (or at least every job they like) up to 99 already, but it's still shocking considering the last time I truly played, I had to wait to get a spot for merit points...and it wasn't even that long ago.
