  • New RDM on Bahamut.

Sorry if this isn't in the right place, but anyways! I am a level 24 RDM/ 10 WHM on Bahamut and have a few questions. Can make gil fairly easily and soloed the SJ quest pretty handily so I am an OK player. Question #1- Is WHM a good us job for RDM? I have been leveling WHM for about an hour but want to be sure that tho is the right SJ. My thought was that it would add MP and the extra healing is nice. Is this good? Do you have any better combos?
#2- Should I be focusing on the quests for Windurst yet? That is my starter nation but I don't have any idea whether I should be working on those yet? Missions or leveling?
#3- Where can I find a party and how the heck am I supposed to find a party and would anyone be interested in partying? As I stated above my name is Dreadlord and I am on Bahamut. If you are interested please post here. Thanks!

    Re: New RDM on Bahamut.

    1. /WHM is a good sub for RDM in it's own right (and it's actually the most popular one, last time I checked), but there are several subjobs that are good for RDM for different reasons. It's probably easier to list the "bad" subs for RDM, so long as you know what you're doing. (Probably /MNK, /BST, /BRD, /SMN, /SAM, /DRG, /COR, /PUP, and I think /GEO are what you want to avoid.)

    2. Leveling first and then blowing through the story later is what's commonly encouraged by the FFXI community, and it does have the distinct advantage of not having to experience the story in fragmented segments at a time.

    3. Partially unrelated to you searching for a party, but level your subjob! Your subjob is basically a free stat bonus you're denying yourself by keeping underleveled. There really isn't much of a good reason for you to not level your WHM to 49 right away (using your 24 RDM as a sub for it), so you can level RDM all the way to 99 without concerning yourself over your subjob again.

Unless the game's changed drastically since I left, your go-to subjobs should be(in no particular order): White Mage, Black Mage, Scholar, Ninja

Anything other than those four is likely to be a highly specialized build and Ninja is already stepping into that territory. Personally I found Scholar was the best general purpose subjob for a Red Mage while White Mage and Black Mage were superior in more specific circumstances.

      2. No, you should be re-rolling as someone from Bastok.

Thanks! Guess I'll be grinding those WHM levels first. Also , another question (or two).
1- Should I be crafting anything? I have heard that fishing for moat carp can get some nice money, not that it's an issue just yet, but other than that, should I bother with a craft yet?
2- Are the Limit Breaks and advanced job quests soloable? Could I easily find someone to help me if they aren't?

Sorry for all the questions guys, it's just that I haven't really been able to ask anyone except for here and have pretty much figured things out 100% on my own. Thank you again!

Don't bother with crafting until you have a stockpile of money. Leveling a craft is expensive. It's very easy to bankrupt yourself leveling a craft. If you're going to insist on leveling anything, level cooking. It will serve you well and eventually you'll be able to make a steady if modest profit.
Fishing is for bots and crazy people. People always need moat carp for the Lu Shang's fishing rod quest though, so you'll always have buyers for those carp.

            2. Depends on the quests, but generally you're going to want some help on the limit breaks. I actually still have an old blog post detailing my attempt to solo my first limit break as a Red Mage. Might be worth a read if you're planning on sticking with Red Mage: Mediocre Mage: Genkai 1, or: An adventure in losing exp

Best advice anyone can give you is to find a good linkshell. It will make a world of difference both in how fast you progress as well as how much fun the game is.
