  • Your Top 5 FFXI Moments

Got to thinking, most of us have played this game for quite some time. We've all had accomplishments, let downs, pet peeves, moments of elation, moments of boredom, goals, failures, blood, sweat, and tears.

So what are your top five? What are those moments you will remember for the rest of your life? The moments that still give you chills?

    Mine (in no particular order):
    1. Getting my Duelist's Chapeau. I had waited longer than most for it, I suppose. I was nearly at the top of the list in my first linkshell when I quit the LS, unhappy with the leadership and some of the members that I couldn't get along with. So I started all over in a new Dynamis LS, toiling away week by week by week with them until it dropped. I still remember how badly I was shaking and how I almost couldn't lot. I remember the chat in LS when it dropped, from the "it's mine, right!!!!" and the "OMFG" "OMFG" "OMFG" spam. I was at Cerealkiller's house then (we were still dating back then) and I think he may have been concerned that I was going to die of hyperventilation. And I was on WHM, so I couldn't even put it on. Posted on BG, posted here, I was so elated. Probably one of my crowning moments in the game.
    2. Getting my Cleric's Belt. It was the first thing I put on my wishlist when I got into Excellence, and it stayed there for seriously I don't know how long. Everyone else in the LS already had it so I was first in line from the get go, how many times did we do Qufim and Valk (I think Valk? Fuck if I can remember) without it dropping. I still remember all of the teasing from the ls about me possibly d/cing (a distinct possibility) and the "F:LKDG:OISUDG" spam that I put into /linkshell. I won't ever forget that being the one drop I wanted more than anything else from Ex, and finally getting it.
    3. My first Dynamis LS's first Dynamis Lord kill. I joined this LS at level 69 RDM, poorly geared and later would find out that I'd joined the LS's first ever run. I had no fucking idea what I was doing and watched the /assist and wasn't sure if I was supposed to be sleeping mobs, nuking stones with the BLM /assist, or casting enfeebs on regular mobs. I kind of wandered around for a bit randomly casting for a while until someone (can't remember who) kindly told me what I should have been doing. So this LS I stayed with for a while, working my way up on points and getting some AF for my RDM and WHM. So when we finally made it to Xarc and got to DL, we failed probably seven or eight times before finally, finally getting him down. I was living in Pittsburgh with roommates at the time, people who I barely knew and whose names I don't remember, I'm chatting on vent already which is strange enough to them, but suddenly when we take the DL down and out pops a "OH MY GOD" among other things I think I scared the crap out of those girls. And I wasn't the only one. That celebration will stay with me for a long time. I was glad to be a part of that.
    4. Getting into Excellence. It wasn't much of a secret when I left my sea/sky LS that while I was sick of the people there, I had always wanted to move forward and not stay in the LS with them because they didn't do HNMs. My boyfriend at the time was in Excellence and several of my friends from a social were there, as well, so it seemed natural that I would gravitate toward it. I spent a lot of time with a couple of my friends who were sackholders helping me get my gear in line and put my app together. I was granted a trial and I think I almost failed - but I asked for another chance and after a month of coming to events with no points gain and no drops, I was offered the opportunity to get a BLM hat in Xarc, with the stipulation that it would be my first item as a member, and that if I let my attendance drop, I would be out. I think I pretty much jumped out of my skin when I got that /t. And I may have /danced IRL.
    5. A super late night Khimaira pop and claim with three BLMs and a PLD. Late, late, late, late, late, not sure why I was still up, late, late, late. One PLD and three BLMs camping Khimmy and the fucker pops and we claim him. Immediately we work on getting the hate up on the PLD and calling people on their phones and <call> <call> <call> and the PLD gets petra'd. Three BLMs sit there spamming Cure III until it wears off ... finally we get it under control and a couple of our members asleep at camp wake up and I warp back to town to change to WHM. I have never changed jobs so fast in my life, ran like hell back to the camp. That was perhaps the most challenging and fun HNM pop ever. I'll never forget how three BLMS kept a PLD alive through nothing more than Cure III while he was unable to do anything but ... pray.

I know you guys have some great moments. Feel free to describe them in detail, how you felt, environmental, all that. It's amazing what people remember when they call forth a memory - what music was playing or who was in the party or what food you were munching on at the time. So many people and things I'll never forget. So share!

Re: Your Top 5 FFXI Moments

Most of my moments are more sentimental than achievement oriented. Sorry to say, as long as I've played the game, I really don't have much of a resume.

    1. lolFeiwong- Nothing more needs to be said.

    2. Being among the first groups to beat Alexander (ToAU final mission version)- Followed by days of everybody crying about how hard he is.

    3. Defeating the Shadow Lord in "Fiat Lux"- That fight wasn't a joke at 75. Shame it's not available more often. And that its gear is woefully outclassed now.

    4. Getting Primal Rend- Because most people gear to defend against physical attacks and not magical attacks, Primal Rend made my taru BST a pure man-beast in Ballista. Especially after I got Temperance Axe. This was back before BST was cool and a bandwagon job...yes...it's a bandwagon job now because of how Dynamis has been changed.

    5. Fei'yin 5-1- Not so much the fight itself. But way back in my n00b days, I was really making a push to finish missions, even if there weren't many benefit to doing so at the time. I seriously was just barely level 50 and figured I'd do it because, hey, the level cap of that fight is 50! A group shouted for 5-1 and I joined. They asked if I had Teleport-Vahzl and I said I didn't but that they were still forming and I could make my way there. They booted me from the group. I wasn't thinking rationally at the time, so going by sense of direction alone ("in general, Beaucedine Glacier is North, so if I keep going North in Ranguemont Pass, eventually I'll get there...right?!"), I made my way to Fei'yin myself just to show them.

Not only did I make it there, but I beat them to it. And they didn't even find a full party, so I was able to join them in the end anyway. Pretty good for someone who was essentially winging it the whole way. Not very practical in hindsight and I really lucked out. But I did walk away with an appoach for this game that the first person who will help you do something has to be yourself.

      5. First time in Sancutary of Zi'tah

      4. The Night I joined Order of Valor.

      3. That time the gilsellers logged out and Eastern Shadow popped seconds later. Vaii's Bow was mine.

      2. Joining Limit Break Radio

      1. Helping lots of friends get Sea access. I was always more about doing missions than endgame anyway.

Re: Your Top 5 FFXI Moments

I would hope that at least 4 of my best moments in FFXI would still be ahead of me, but topping my list so far (with comparatively little competition) is going 1/3 on RDM Maat. To say that it was a rush would be an understatement, but I have to say that that third fight didn't go nearly as long as I would've expected--we were both in the middle of Chainspell when the fight ended.

Runner-ups so far include a 2-round-long Clash of the Comrades (with the first round ending due to time), successfully soloing that freaking Carousel-spamming jerk at level 50 without Anima (pretty much the only thing I remember ever needing to kite-DoT-nuke so far), my first time on the Tavnazian Archipelago, making my way through Castle Zvahl (even at 75, the design of the place was awe-inspiring; they clearly wanted to send a message of that being the "very definitely final dungeon," per se), organizing a most rag-tag unorthodox Altepa party while leveling WHM that ended up working out beautifully (DNC/NIN and RNG/NIN co-pullers--two JP players who decided to spread out and share pulling duties, BLU/NIN tank, THF/NIN SATA, a poor PUP/WAR who was the only one available to first-voke, and me of all people to make sure that the aforementioned PUP only nearly died), and . . . yeah, I can't really think of anything that tops that. This particular list is probably from least memorable to most-memorable.

At any rate, as I progress further on my Missions and reach level 99, I still have many more memories to make ahead of me.

Maat fight is another good one, I think everyone's first Maat kill is exceptionally special. Because when I killed it as a geared BLM at 75 and I practically one-shotted him (convinced if I was Taru and had a few other pieces of gear I could have), it was kind of anti-climatic. But killing him as a 69 RDM was special.

Re: Your Top 5 FFXI Moments

I still play often, so I'm sure this will change in the future, but my list as it stands now:

                  1. Finishing my first set of AF (WHM). We went with three. Me as a 60 WHM/BLM that had very little way of refreshing MP, and a mid-60s PLD and SAM. It was dicey and I remember my hands being very cold when I finished, but I got my Healer's Briault and Paragon of White Mage Excellence title.

                  2. First Maat fight (WHM). I went 1/2. The first fight I opened with Diaga to wipe any Blink shadows he may have put up, then hit him with Repose. He slept and I rested to full MP. When he woke up, he hit me with Paralyze. I Bene'd then froze as he came up to me and pounded me. I was literally Paralyzed as I watched myself KO. Second fight went much closer to my original plan. Diaga, Repose, rest. Paralyze, Bene, Repose, rest, fight over.

                  3. Finishing the Glavoid stage of Twashtar. It is literally nothing special at 80, but Glavoid was such a huge pain in the ass, that I feel more of an accomplishment at finishing that stage then 85 (and working on 90 now).

                  4. Clearing the 95-99 limit break when it was still hard. It took until my 6th try, having tried most working (at the time) strategies without success. Then I was standing with my flag up on WHM and there they were, 4 Monks searching and an Alex SMN. Five /tells and 10 minutes later, it was on to level 99.

                  5. My first time in Sea. It was after the cap was lifted for most of the fights, but I still remember standing and looking in awe as I walked among trees that were coming up out of the ground (water? jello?). It's still my favorite zone in the game.
                  99 DNC
                  99 WHM
                  99 WAR
                  * 99 THF
                  99 BLM * 99 RDM *
                  99 PUP

In no particular order and all done pre-level cap increase

                    1. Beating CoP
                    2. Beating ToA
                    3. Getting Captain
                    4. Getting full Homam
                    5. Getting all Sky gear

*EDIT* those are more accomplishments... not really moments...

                    So, moments:

                    1. first time running through Sea... so beautiful. What's a UFO???
                    2. first time running through Sky. It took me FOR-EV-ER to learn all the different paths and how to get to Byakko.
                    3. beating Alekzandre with our static on the first try. it was fucking epic. beat him with our pld down to 50 hp or so, me and the other sam did the OMFG, sam 2 hour x2 to bring him to his knees.
                    4. finally claiming Charbydis and duoing him on my 75 nin and an ls mate on his 75 rdm. No one would help me claim, so i had to grab him and then shout for help in the ls and hope to stay alive while he ran to come help... it was close, but he made it just in time...
                    5. getting the drop on the swift belt, soboro, and learning refueling were all epic because it took me so fucking long to get, lol...

                      In no particular order...
                      • Running from Sea Serpent Grotto to Kazham without pulling aggro.
                      • Duoing Kam'lanaut as 75 PLD/RDM with a 75 WHM/SCH friend.
                      • Whipping out a 7-hit, 800 damage Vorpal Blade against an IT mob in Bibiki Bay on my 68ish PLD and closing a 400 damage Skillchain.
                      • Making it about 3/4 through the Grand Palace of Hu'Xzoi solo on my 75 PLD/RDM. Might've made it all the way if a Grah hadn't aggroed and gotten in an unresisted Thunder...
                      • Leading my CoP group to victory against Ultima/Omega (back when it mattered.) This one involved a two sub-achievements:
                        • Discovering that Hi-Pots give hefty amount of hate that doesn't depend on how much HP was healed. The NIN tank could spam them whenever he lost hate and get it back relatively quick.
                        • I parsed the chat logs of our defeat by hand and noticed we all had capped hit rate and near-capped Attack. We switched all the melees to defense food, and it made a huge difference to our survivability without affecting our damage (we were using sushi.)

Distant 6th: Being one of the few PLDs that tanked PLD/RDM during levels 56-64 in ToAU.

                      Bonus! My worst moment:
Thinking I stood a chance against Ark Angel EV on my 75 PLD/RDM. I figured I could control her TP with Stoneskin/Flash and just run backwards to avoid Spirits Within/Vorpal Blade. But as soon as the fight started, she hit me Dominion Slash and I realized her special "WS" is actually a Job Ability on a timer. Did not go as planned...

lol it was pretty anti-climactic too when I beat him as a 70 WAR - honestly, for all the hype and build-up it was a letdown; the actual fight was about 5 seconds as I did berserk -> warcry -> aggressor -> mighty strikes -> raging rush -> raging rush (he was dead before the skillchain even hit, which nearly killed him whereas he gives up once you reduce his HP below 30%)

EDIT: My worst moment I'd say was going through the Aqueducts only to realize I didn't click the ??? again after beating the Prof... oh God I was so mad.

I hear an easy Maat fight is just as attributable to luck though. I won my first RDM Maat and I hear RDM Maat is a savage. He never resisted any of my sleeps. But I'm pretty sure I was just lucky.

It really depends on the job. SAM is like WAR: all you need to do is show up and 2-hour his face you're done in a few seconds.

PLD Maat was relatively uneventful for me. Just kept my HP up and started chugging hi-pots when I was low on MP and eventually he was dead and I wasn't. Granted, I used DD gear and a Joytoy whereas most PLDs would try to turtle him (good luck with that...) It was just a war of attrition, so my victory was just a matter of time. Casters need to stick their enfeebles though, and there's always some luck there.

Yeah it took me five tries to get Maat down on RDM. First time I was just too nervous and I kept messing up stupidly, second time Sleep and Sleep II both resisted so I was dead almost instantly, third and fourth time I honestly can't remember (but I remember I threw my controller across the room), and finally the fifth time I managed to do it. I felt pretty lame because I can be very competitive and I felt like not being 1/1 on Maat would mean I was a shitty RDM. Took me a while to realize that there is a lot of luck involved in most Maat fights, the RDM one especially.

WHM, on the other hand, Repose bitches. And BLM I just put out a fully merited Burst II on Thunder day, followed up by a Thunder III which ended things quickly. No need to sleep the bastard, I really did come very close to oneshotting him. I was going to try him on SMN next, but I never got to it. Maat's cap was one of those things I never got to in game.
