    Re: Random FFXI-related chat

If you would like to speak with someone to weigh the benefits vs the risk, PM Romyro. I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you he's never used it and still had a great time playing the game.

      Bullshit.

I 100% endorse the use of Windower. It made the game far more enjoyable.

I may wait a while, there is little point in me jumping head first into a flaming Mount Gulug.

Honestly gear switching has always been a dumb mechanic and loved that they killed it dead in FFXIV. You should see how huge my THF and WHM XML files are for spellcast.

At one point, I played the game with the frame of mind that, if the game is any good, it should be good without third party enhancement. I didn't begrudge other people that did, but it wasn't for me.

Nowadays? If nothing else, being stuck using one window and resorting to my smartphone for internet on the side is unacceptable.

I'll admit, I find it disconcerting to be literally restrained to one window.

There's an option in FFXI Config that lets you start your game in windowed mode. I've not had any problems with it (apart from occasionally alt-tabbing out of my window on accident when being somewhat sloppy with my macro inputs, and that's just a PIBKAC).

Wow. A tidbit about FFXIV that actually made me do a double-take for once. I'm impressed.

It was dumb, but it was honestly the most intriguing aspect of the game.

No, that would be if I were playing it on the PS2.

Very late to the party but i just wanted to throw out there that i HAVE used windower before, years ago. it's a cool program and was very helpful...however imho SE doesn't care that you use it but if you get in trouble for something, they will use it against you.

It's going to make things easier for you such as gear swapping and being able to ride certain JA timers but at the end of the day, it's not going to make you much better of a player. Whats going to make you a better player is knowledge of what your doing and making the right choices in split second decisions.

i'm always amazed at poepel who use scrpits (if thats the right phrase). Where they have bots that automaticaly cast Stun or Cure when certian dialog appears. i mean my god, you suck that bad?

This, when I've seen it, is primarily done by people who are 2 or 3 boxing, which, in my opinion, is a problem with the game design. Much of the content these days is not quite soloable, but very easy if you have a healer. However, there are not enough healers for everyone to have one in their pocket, and being a pocket whm is not exactly a fun and engaging experience, so people buy additional accounts to get what they need. In coming back to the game I was stunned by how widespread this is, and I couldn't imagine myself paying $40 a month for this game, but I understand why people would think in that direction.

On a side note, in exploring the darker side of spellcast, it occurred to me that Final Fantasy XII was basically "Introduction to Botting." The thought amused me to no end. It's basically proof that 90% of Final Fantasy gameplay can be handled by mindless decisions based on discrete conditionals, and SE's recognition that that is not fun.

For stuns I'm pretty sure it's due to the fact that the window for stunning some stuff can be absurdly small after you factor in the time it takes for packets to travel to the servers in Japan and then the additional delay of the game client actually displaying it. I recall there being a discussion floating around at one point about how the Utsusemi shadow counter plug-in would actually display the change in shadow count before the game client would even show the text indicating it b/c it was grabbing the info straight from the packets. FFXI is not very well optimized by all accounts I've heard, and some silly small stun windows on top of lag and client delay...well it's not really surprising people resorted to stun-botting.

Never really saw the need for it, but I certainly understand the motivations behind people using it.

Also: scripted pocket mages. Because that's a thing people do.

That is a thing that drives me mad about stuns. On my old connection, the weather could literally dictate whether I could be effective at my job, because an extra 200 ms of ping is the difference between always being able to stop must-stun moves and never being able to. It's a pretty glaring exception in a game that in every other respect is specifically designed to be latency-agnostic.

Apparently my gear/skill is insufficient to solo farm demons in Dyna-Tav. Unrelated to above.
