I had faith restored in humanity today.
Someone I met in a party and I split off from the main group and travelled to Jeuno and then San d'Oria, she's given me some suggestions on getting started with crafting and how to rely on other methods of moneymaking rather than just crystals. Some random person (Sandringhan I think his name was) in San d'Oria came up to me and gave me 50k, and I was later told that it was part of the "Help the Noob" strategy that several players have going on. Later on, when I was alone and realised I was stranded too far north of Bastok to get back on my own, I asked (not shouted) in a packed part of Jeuno and a kind whitemage (Madhealer) teleported me back to the Dem Crag in the Highlands, allowing me to avoid the Marshland and get to the Outpost in North Gustaberg safely, and thus back to Bastok.
Of course, I also experienced a party in FFXI for the first time in years where I was able to use debuffs and status aliments on enemies as well as heal, and do some damage - good for me as it's allowing me to sharpen up my knowledge of the redmage. I went from level 17>28 during that, so it's been a good day for my character and a good day for my faith in humanity.
There was an asshat in the party I mentioned earlier. But he's not worth giving two thoughts to, the asshat.
