Soooo undecided!!!!

When I rejoin ffxi soon hopefully, I don't know what job I want to be my main. I was thinking about going the path of mages and starting as a blm, then later a smn. However, I always have loved melee jobs. But I need something that can solo decently. I'm so confused If I wanted melee would it be better to start as war or rdm until I get to drg? Even when I played as a mage, I always felt wrong because I needed to be hitting something lol.

Somebody please suggest me something lol.

If you like magic and hitting things: BLU

If you want a melee job: WAR, SAM, DRK, MNK, PLD, DRG, NIN, BLU

If you want automatic party invites: SCH, WAR, COR, BLM, RNG, BST, WHM (Also has the side effect of you never getting to play another job again)

If you want automatic party when a BST or RNG isn't around: THF

If you like to solo: BST, SMN, PUP, DNC, NIN, THF, RDM

If you like to heal hate your liver have everything to be your fault never want to get invited to events outside of Abyssea ever: WHM

Out of the starting jobs I'd play Rdm 1-30 at least. It's the main subjob I use for Sch and for my other mages I /sch.

I mainly play solo, I use Bst & Pup and with those I /Dnc. for Smn I /sch but with some planning and preperation you can solo exp and NM's quite well.

I play Dnc also and /sam.

for dd's you'd want to /sam /nin /war depending on the situation.

mages I /sch unless I'm using sch main then I /rdm.

These suggestions may not be optimal for end game activities. I don't participate in those so I can only give you a suggestion that will suit general levelling and questing.

For subs /WAR is more or less the best DD sub and there are also very strong arguments for it being the best NIN sub as well (for when you aren't low manning things and need /DNC)

To sum up:

Physical DD = /WAR, unless you are WAR in which cast nobody will care if you turn up subless because you're going to outdamage everything anyway.
Magical DD = /SCH unless SCH then /RDM
Tank = /WAR, NIN
WHM = /SCH, /NIN
Solo = /DNC, /NIN

The only time a mage ever subs BLM is if they're gimp, it's a RDM stuck proccing Yellow, or are too cheap to buy a Scroll of Instant Warp.

EDIT: Yeah this is for endgame, not low levels of playing around low manning stuff with friends.

The only time a mage ever subs BLM is if they're gimp, it's a RDM stuck proccing Yellow chainspell stunning, or are too cheap to buy a Scroll of Instant Warp.

/SCH gives you the same yellow procs as /BLM.
/BLM is more or less for stun access.

Ah right I forgot about Stun from /BLM because the last time I subbed it on WHM was whenever it was when SCH got that huge update that added Sublimation. 2008 I think?

Ha…sure maybe for the final limit break and dyanmis. Other than that…peeps still don’t invite Bsts much.

For starter jobs, I would say War or Mnk. Both are fun job and can help you if you decide to jump over to advance jobs. Also, both jobs wreck shit up at 99.
I have personally found Thf to be pretty fun but lacking the big hits War and Mnk can do…although my thf is pretty bad.

I have whm and blm but I do not find them as fun.

I would try blu, but then I’d be inclined to get ALL the blu spells regardless of their usefulness. And I’m not prepared for that lol.

Say you have Falcorr and watch all the THFs in the group that don't have Mandau + Twashtar cry in a corner because you literally just made their class completely redundant in Voidwatch/Legion with a single consumable . Trust me, outside of Abyssea THF is joke tier since there's literally nothing they can offer that another class can't also offer plus more.

TH? BST and RNG have that covered.
Hate Control? Everyone is emnity capped pretty quick anyway.
VW Procs? Pretty much anything that can equip a dagger has it done
Damage? My WHM outdamages my THF (though to be fair Warrior is ridiculously OP and 2 handers are just utterly broken with a SCH in the group. It's still a shame when an average WAR/DRK can out damage a great THF/WAR without even really trying.)

First off…Falcorr and Dippy’s TH has been nerfed. Capable of getting to what…TH2? Whereas a thf can max out around 12. I’ve never had a group invite me over a THF if they were looking for TH.

Secondly…pets die so easily in those events since there’s only 2 ways to cure them. And it’s not practical to drop a stack of pet food and some dawns every time I do a VW run. Not to mention if you die, the fight is over by the time Call beast is ready again. Pets last longer with the right gear but then your hurting yourself.

Finally…BOTH jobs are not considered for VW/Legion. Maybe Bst would get chosen over Thf, both jobs are just filler spots in those events when they jobs they are really looking for arent answering. I’m a fairly decked out Bst and I have a hard time getting into any higher tier VW battles. 90% of the time I’m ask ‘do you have any other jobs?’. As for legion…I wonder if anyone has even allowed a Bst in a serious legion run lol

which is another reason why you only see specific jobs in PUG shouts. from what i understand is groups will get 2 or 3 Wars. 1 or 2 to cover other WS procs, and the other(s) to heavy DD.

When you gear up your whm for meleeing, it outdamages thf. But when are you able to use your melee whm outside of your free time? And average WAR/DRK can probably out damage a great Bst/??? Too.


Im not trying to debating what job is better or more versitle. I’m just pointing out the fact that as a Bst, the invites are not ‘automatic’ by any stretch.

There's a lot of good suggestions in here Thank you guys. I've been thinking along the lines of becoming a summoner, but the Avatars are so hard to get, especially Fenrir, if I'm remembering right. Maybe rdm would be better starting off if I plan to be a smn as a main?

The avatars are easier to get now, You'll easily find somebody that will kill them for you just for the fun of it.

If you take the bits of advice firewind and myself have given and just use the parts that apply to your interests,

Since you mentioned playing Smn as a main I'd suggest,

Red mage ->30 or 49 for cap.
Unlock Summoner and Scholar.
Scholar -> 49 for subjob cap. Using red mage as your subjob.
Summoner all the way using Sch as subjob.

Using what I've suggested you then have the option of being a scholar and red mage and taking them to 99 also. You then wouldn't have to worry about going back to level a subjob since you've already levelled them.

It sounds like a lot of work but the speed of levelling is crazy thses days.

That sounds like a great plan I'm sure that's what I'll do when I start. rdm was what I started as the first time I played the game. I always did enjoy rdm lol. But smn has been my dream for a long time.
