I am sure SE wont do it, but I am very sure that once FFXI is "Dead" if it ever does, then someone will hack the PC version into a single player game. I honestly would like it turned into a 12 player drop in-dropout multiplayer, that would be fun.
but UO and Everquest are still going sooooo.... *shrugs*

I'm pretty sure there's no way to do this without implementing your own server for the client to connect to. And that's never going to be perfect since there's still a lot of low level details we don't know, like how mob pathfinding is calculated, or the power of every mob move. It's just too big of an undertaking to try to reverse-engineer absolutely everything in FFXI and get it right.
Worse yet, if the servers are already down then you have nothing to test against. You'll be going purely off memory when trying to reimplement everything. (If the servers are up SE will sue the pants off of you.)
They'd be within their rights to, yes. And considering what happened to Chrono Trigger Resurrection, they probably would. It's just a certainty instead of a possibility when the official servers are still up. There's no way you can deny that you're stealing their subscriptions.
So you missed that part where the creator of Xenogears, along with most of the team behind it works in Nintendo now?
I'll never understand why people want studios to carry on a franchise when the creative force behind it is gone. Final Fantasy is one thing, as it's all about reinventing itself, but Chrono Trigger and Xenogears? You need all the key players.
They've all moved on. Maybe you should, too.
Seriously, I think you need to get on Xenoblade. It's a much better game, to be honest. Mostly because they remembered the game part, though to be fair they had that in Baten Kaitos as well. There must be something about a Nintendo platform that makes them do that. I could barely tolerate all the story wank of the Playstation Xeno titles.
Also they gave Namco grief over the Xeno names because corporations are legally obligated to police thier IPs. Same thing as Bethesda and Mojang over a game named Scrolls.
Not the point. If you have 0 intentions of doing something with a certain franchise, perhaps because you're unable to, it's really fucking assholeish of you to prevent others from doing something productive with it. Especially when they're doing it for free, with no intentions of profiting from it, and are essentially giving you free publicity and paying tribute. I don't know if there's any truth to what Mal is saying but it's also dickish to try to prevent the creator of Xenogears from starting Xenosaga.
tl;dr They're fucking dicks for shutting down Chrono Trigger fan games.

It does suck but...... "corporations are legally obligated to police their IPs."

Nintendo seems to be doing just fine turning a blind eye to the Pokemon ROM hacks. Hell, Sega interacted with SonicRetro for Sonic 4 and they have all the beta ROMs, remake projects and documentation on the Genesis game engines. Xenosaga was a bit of a murky area because of the name, but shutting down the Chrono Trigger remakes was pretty mean.
It's thier IP. Monolith signed away Xenogears to SE in exchange for having the game published. This happens all the time.
The creator of Portal does not own Portal anymore. That doesn't mean Valve's a bunch of dicks. If she went and made Portal 3 for SE, they'd have every right to sue her. She made Quantum Condundrum instead, but I'll bet she signed that away to SE to have it published. Thatgamecompany does not own fl0w, Flower or The Journey. They made them, but Sony owns them now.
You're letting nostalgia cloud your reasoning on this one, sorry. You don't have to like it but this is reality.
Look, I'm just saying if you have an IP, and you're letting it rot, and you've been letting it rot for 15 years, but you don't want anybody else to do something with it, you're kind of an asshole. There's lots of ways to be an asshole within the confines of the law; there's no anti-asshole laws yet. Just like Apple and Microsoft are assholes for submitting loads of super-ambiguous patents and then suing the pants off of everybody on a regular basis, and George Lucas will hog Star Wars to himself until we're all dead, and a couple of decades beyond that. Legal? Yes. But extremely douchebag of them.
And that is exactly why Copyright law originally only applied for like 27 years (don't remember right now), but thanks to the corporate parasites it is now more than a hundred years. Which allows those a-holes to do things like this.
I don't think anyone needs more than 20 years of intellectual property, after that it should be public domain.

It was in an IGN article years ago when they were previewing the first game. Also, Tanaka produced Xenogears btw, not that it matters when there's really no connection between any of these games anyhow.
Xenogears is Episode 7 IIRC, and the Xenosaga team had wanted to make an official prequel to it at the outset but got cockblocked by SE saying no, when they had no intent of using the license anyway (again, according to the people IGN interviewed). How is that not being a complete asshole? While I'm at it, SE's also driven the mana series into the ground as well (which was also produced by Tanaka though I don't think he had anything to do with World of Mana which would explain why that game bombed so hard).
