  • Gil Trading - The Good - The Bad - The Ugly

Now I know SE makes money off of XI off of the players that do play XI (such as myself) now I was wondering. Since the release of the game, up until now. How much has SE cracked down on Gil Buying? My girlfriend wants to buy some and I am trying my best to convince her not to, I told her if she is even thinking of doing it, do it on a trial and get that banned at least instead of her main. She said she'd split the gil with me, but I feel like if I go to use the gil it will come up as like "counterfeit" in game or something so I was like "No thanks." Did I do the right thing?

There's no such thing as counterfeit gil. Gil is gil. That's not to say that suddenly receiving an insane amount of money won't look suspicious. That said, it sounds like you're only worried about getting banned. Buying gil has moral implications; RMT ruins MMOs, and if you buy gil you're contributing to that. THAT's what your girlfriend needs to understand. MMOs are made to suck your time and money; either tough it out or quit. Don't ruin the game for others by taking the easy way out.

I told her that and she's like "The economy is bad enough, I don't feel like farming anymore." She went and transferred to my server this morning and she's all pissy. I told her why not pay the 25 dollars and send your main over instead of cheating and buying gil for your naked toon. She said she's doing all this to "Be with me." Well honey if you want me that's fine but don't be a cornball and make an excuse like that to get me to love you.

I wouldn't buy the gil, or take it from her. If she can't farm money, to get the items she wants, well, just teach her how to farm for more money faster. I remember the beast blood farming. It still sells for a decent amount, and no one farms it any more now. It may not get you a lot, but its still worth it.

Or, if she can get access to abby, use the abby conquest points (Can't think of the name off the top of my head.), to buy the gear there, and npc it for money. Each piece is about 7k gil, and they are cheap for how many points you get per hour in that place. That's how I made money as soon as abby came out.

Yeah. I will do that, she refuses to bring her main over and her main has gil on it. She's like "I don't want to say goodbye to my friends. D:" She also said, "I don't have 25 to be throwing around." But yet you'll pay for gil? Like where does that add up?

Definitely don't take it from her. If she happens to get caught, they will trace the money trail to you, and you will get banned as well. Gil isn't hard to come by, "you're girlfriend" just needs to know what to farm.

I told her this and watch how you speak of her please. I appreciate the feed back, I will warn her. She says she knew someone who bought 30 Mil. I was like "Did they get caught?" But my question is how will they trace the money?

Sorry, I didn't realize it was a real person you were talking about. I assumed you said "my girlfriend" because you didn't want us to know it was you. My apologies. I don't know exactly how it works, but I would think that the person that trades the purchased gil to the buyer would need to do it on a "clean" account, that way it wouldn't have any flags against it. I also assume that it happens a lot, and people don't get caught, so knowing someone that bought 30M might be true. SE can trace the money, I assume, just by looking at the logs. Use FFXIAH and search for Cruohg on Cerberus server. That is one way to trace it, and a blatant one at that.

A suggestion: You have been looking to get off of Sylph and your girlfriend doesn't want to leave her friends on her server. Why don't you two split the $25 and have you transfer to her?

I'm just going to make a sweeping generalization here: engaging in RMT eventually leads to being ostracized by the community.

You don't even have to farm, getting from lvl 1-15 gave me 6 stacks of crystals, many items I could sell, sheepskin, wolf hide, zinc ore and thats just in gusteburg.... Get a brown chest drop and a good chance of getting an evolith, thats min 700gil when traded to outpost merchant.

Re: Gil Trading - The Good - The Bad - The Ugly

lol, the chances of your girl getting banned for buying gil are so slim that should be a non-factor.

I don't mind admiting that i bought alot of gil when I played. Most i bought at one time was 100mil and most of the time the ammount was in the 20-50mil range. It was stupid, spending that much money on a video game like XI, but i was happy, and it didn't hurt me financially in RL. I never had an account banned, and hell, i botted the shit out of everything, fishing, HNM, etc. Usually when you buy that ammount you'll sell a crystal or an arrow in your bazzar for 100mil and some random facesmashkeyboard mule will role up on you and buy it. No talking, no /tells, just bam: "some schmuck just paid 100mil for a clump of boyahad grass".

SE doesn't care about RMT anymore IN ANY MAJOR CAPACITY. They don't listen to the playerbase, the only thing they listen to is their revenue per month from subscriptions. why ban someone who bought 20mil gil (ala 2-3 high end items and food/teleport/consumable cash for a couple weeks/month) when that 20 mil =
                      1. the buyer's account : 12.95
                      2. the seller's account : 12.95
                      3. the crafter's/farmer's account (for the items that most likely got bought with the gil): 12.95

They would lose almost 40 bucks if they cracked down on RMT at this point in the game, and honestly, having been following BG and reading what the Dev's are planning, the game is about to be put to pasture. I mean don't get me wrong, i love the game, but i'll never play it again, and the memories i have from it, while definetly head shaker's on some, are generally good and make me smile.
I'm not condoning spending RL money on fake money, just trying to give you hind sight into a view of the "grand scheme of things"

More importantly, not sure how long you've been with this girl, but don't let her convince you to buy a bunch of gil, transfer to her server, and then have her steal it all. NOT SAYING THAT WILL HAPPEN, hell i know next to nothing about you or her. I'm just saying that's classic FFXI drama, and should be avoided at all cost, LOL.

I mean, if SE really gave a shit about RMT, they'd make it so curor couldn't be obtained in any crazy capacity, then converted to pink/blue/white armor and NPC'd for gil. I mean, there are bots that make 2-5mil a day doing that, with little to no human input.

The game, while it has it's moments, is still a 9 year old game at this point. It may sound hypocritical but i can't believe people still play it. I was addicted, and i broke that addiction finally, and realized through "experimenting" with other MMO's just how horribly designed FFXI is.

Re: Gil Trading - The Good - The Bad - The Ugly

I understand, but it still raises a red flag not to do it. For it would be the "right" thing not to do, I understand SE only cares about income off this game, but it would also be unfair to the other players, simply taking gil like that without much effort. As for the botting, there's still some human input I guess (setting it up? Lol). That being said, no harm, no foul on the girlfriend part. I also would like to know when you bought your gil, in what year. Since security on XI has watered down to near nothing since I do believe....'10 or so. Last time I seen someone get jailed was for literally slandering developers in the dunes about how much the game sucked and why it was so hard to level, she was released. She thought I jailed her since I PM'd her "Behave next time and it won't happen."
