Really? A bunch of teenagers are going to reform our government? I suppose this will happen somewhere between knocking down websites and playing Counter-Strike?

If it's just the dick handing me a speeding ticket, I got no quarrel. If it's the guy pepper spraying docile protesters, I got no sympathy.

Anonymous and the Occupy movies were both meaningless garbage with no collective vision or goal. Real hackers groups with some semblance of principle are the ones making the attacks Anonymous takes credit for because those other groups aren't in this for attention. The SOPA/PIPA blackouts changed more minds in one day than the Occupy movement ever did in however long its been going on - human trash couldn't compete with an informed general populace. Imagine that.

If the Ocean Marketing thing proved anything its that you DON'T FUCK WITH THE INTERNET. SOPA/PIPA are the rerun. Its like coming between a mama bear and her babies, really. We will fuck you up and we don't have to hack you to do it.

The internet is retarded and everyone involved in this whole thing is retarded.

When they said the internet was like the wild west, they got it right on the money.

Hollywood are thugs and government and law enforcement are corrupt as hell.

I hate copyright and IP law.

At the signing of the Declaration of Independence they were (approx):

                Jefferson - 33
                Washington - 44
                J. Adams - 41
                Franklin - 70

Regarding SOPA/PIPA vs Piracy ... well, the reason SOPA/PIPA have to die off is because they were disguised attempts at censorship. Go after Piracy? ... fine. Go trample on my rights? Go fuck yourself, congressmen!

I'm glad this issue got attention and wasn't pushed to back page news like other dangerous legislation has of late (indefinite detention w/o trial).

Your point? 33 is still on the young end, your 40s are just barely middle age territory.

In general, the people that make most of our fucked up policy decisions are in their 50s, 60, 70s and even 80s.

The problem is not really their age, though, but their lack of contact with the real world by becoming a career politician. If you look at Darrel Issa's bill, #OPEN, you'll see a bill that is far and away more in touch with how the internet affects commerce, why a free internet is important to that as well as expression and how to properly and further deal with piracy. Issa is a man with contemporary understanding and knowledge of how the world works, these are the sort of guys we need on both sides of the aisle. He represents a generation that understands these things as well as a younger generation that knows them a little btter.

Megaupload was destined to be targeted by the DMCA, which was passed allllllllll the way back in 1998 when the RIAA and MPAA were still in a tizzy about the internet back at the time. It wasn't a perfect bill, but it was an effective one. The MPAA and RIAA only find it insufficient in that the way it protects copyright too effectively for them to win major battles in court. As it stands, a third party that posts movie clips on YouTube can't be prosecuted for money.

The MPAA and RIAA want to be able to sue over copyright wherever they can, but Youtube will protect the user and instead simply take down the infringing video by request of the DMCA. It doesn't give them anyone to sue and it doesn't put any possible competition out of business-

The MPAA and RIAA would like nothing more than to turn back the clock and have three TV channels, a handful of radio stations and a movie theater as the only media consumption in existence. They want to control the messages we recieve and what entertains us, but its not longer easy for them to do that and they front for businesses that utterly refuse to adapt.

Here's a quote from an RIAA spokesman Johnathan Lamy:

After Wikipedia blackrout, somewhere, a student today is doing original research and getting his/her facts straight. Perish the thought.
When I made a comment like this, I mostly did so with some cynicism and humor. This dipshit actually meant every word. He'd like nothing more than a world where you were limited to what was in the library, on TV, in theaters and on the radio.

We don't live in that kind of world anymore. I have technology that lets me put all that shit in my pocket and much, much more. Apple just relaunched iBooks today with iBooks2, more or less reinventing the textbook and, thus, how students reasearch. We have wikipedia now, but we're on the cusp of virtual textbooks that can never really be outdated, always updated and never have waste paper on republishing a new edition at ridiculous prices.

That's amazing shit, but I'm sure some organization fronting for publishers is bound to start some shit over it. You know why? Apple is releasing free tools for people to upload their own books for sale or for free, too. And I'm sure someone will bemoan the good old days of lugging heavy, outdated books around. I doubt most people would agree.

Its good for the environment, practical for education and will actually help innovate education in ways we haven't seen for decades.

Young by today's standards, yes. Not that we really need to dissect this thread too much... but just realize the average life expectancy for someone living in America during the 1700's was about 35yrs. So most of those ages fall under the category of "Holy sh!t you're still alive?!?!?".

My point, BBQ, is that those guys weren't young, and certainly not teenagers. And, if you look at average life expentancy in the late 1700s, Franklin is downright ancient. I was merely disagreeing with Tak and BurningPanther and agreeing with Dak.

Edit: Slip beat me too it.

Could not agree more. While I support the general ideas behind the OW movement, just like the Tea Party, it was a bunch of people with the right sentiments but no real leadership - little more than a noisy, angry flash mob. I mean shit, at one point CNN had an interview with some random idiot in there spouting a bunch of nonsense and then they actually confirmed there were drum circles going on in the background. I didn't want to believe it at first but that pretty much confirmed they were basically a collection of hippies... *sigh* and of course Barnie Frank is retiring, so that's 1 less Dem with the balls to take the fight for social & economic justice seriously. But none of that is terribly relevant to this topic.

I'm not so naive as to believe that sometimes you do have to go around the law to get something important done (See: Arab Spring) but Anonymous honestly strikes me as nothing but teen angst looking to lash out at whomever they feel is a legitimate target. Yeah, sorry assholes, it doesn't work that way. Same thing with Julian Asange, you can't just arbitrarily decide things like that.

Dear Lord, I almost hate myself for it, but part of me is actually glad the NDAA went through now in the event that these Anonymous guys are ever found.

Its important to note that both OW and the Tea Party had no leader for a reason - it creates a target for the media. The media likes targets so it can either discredit or champion movements or at least try to repurpose them for their own agendas. And it should be clear to every internet user that media outlets have agendas, even if they wear the idea of objectivity well.

The Tea party, however, did have a pretty damn clear message - "Stop the spending." That and they'd clean up after themselves after a protest. OW didn't have a clear message, they just hated rich people and stunk up places, women got raped and cop cars shitted on... very interesting message. Anonymous is just a cool kids club that makes threats and does nothing, but is more than happy to take credit for the things real hackers do.

I just absolutely loathe and detest hackers and their ilk, period. Lock 'em up and throw away the key, because all they do is make life miserable from behind the scenes for everyone - anarchists to the core.

It's unfortunate that neither of those 2 movements had any real leadership though - as I actually agree with a lot of the Tea Party's sentiments - just not the rhetoric or the methods the people they helped elect have gone about to fix the problems. Similar deal with the occupy folks - The rich are getting richer and have absolutely too much influence in politics (Romney may as well be the poster boy for the 1%) but instead of an intelligent, throught provoking debate or protests, we get a bunch of fucking hippies squatting in public and private spaces and just generally making a mess, giving more fuel to assholes like Ann Coulter. Basically I feel they did more harm than good for the cause in all honesty.
