  • R.I.P. - Megaupload (SOPA/PIPA are unrelated)

I am not sure if you guys here download anything, but the Feds just shut down one of THE biggest file sharing sites of all time. Megaupload, it was done today, here's the article on it if anyone would like to read it. Our government has gone too far this time. I do believe this SOPA/PIPA bill they're trying to pass completely undermines our first amendment as US Citizens and goes against the freedom we fought so hard to achieve. The internet is where we express ourselves. If the Internet gets Censored and we start losing our favorite sites then it's only a matter of time before we're all assimilated into thinking the government just runs all of us like puppets on a string. So I ask you all, where do you stand on this?

Megaupload was a precious site to me, where I could get my programs, the upload and download rates are incredible, but that has come to an end. I hope we get that site back. This is ridiculous.

Feds Say 7 Behind Celeb-endorsed Megaupload.com Ran Massive, Worldwide Piracy Ring | Fox News

Why is our government so concerned with this? When politics themselves are raw and dirty like dark alleyways and uncleaned sewer passages. I know for a fact I am not re-electing Obama if he's letting this shit slide. I hope to god we impeach his ass.

Also I'd like to share this video with you, I am not sure where you guys stand with Anonymous either, but I think of what they're doing is right.

-Shrugs.- Stuff like this has been going on for a while anyways.

The government will only listen to people if they have to live normal lives like most of us here. But no, they never will. They fear us, we just need to push them until we can break them and reform it.

Uhhhh... SOPA and PIPA had absolutely nothing to do with Megaupload getting shut down.

See? They don't even need SOPA/PIPA to take sites down "while there's an investigation" so why exactly would they need those bills if it wasn't about censorship.

Remember they even took down the song video for a while claiming copyright infringement even though they owned NOTHING AT ALL of it? It's not like they actually needed any proof whatsoever to begin with.

And about Megaupload itself, I always thought they were Hong Kong based, unless the US has jurisdiction there.

PS > Though at least this way there has to be an investigation, contrary to the bills that would give them the power to shut down sites without any requirements other than having the right few people in their pockets.

In response to Raydeus and the apparent redundancy with the DMCA:

Hollywood's desperate for money. They want to extort more millions of dollars from more single mothers apiece. "Piracy" is just a thinly veiled excuse cum scapegoat to hide behind--nobody anywhere on the political spectrum would list piracy as the biggest problem facing America today, in spite of all the RIAA/MPAA-fueled rhetoric to keep SOPA on the table.

One of the many cruel ironies behind all this (in addition to SOPA's author breaking our outdated Copyright laws himself) is that if Hollywood had learned to adapt to new media, everything pertaining to SOPA's very existence would have ended up null and void.

First of all, can we get this thread merged with the original SOPA thread?

Secondly, Nintendo of America is a member of the Entertainment Software Association, which supports(? Or have they recanted their support yet?) SOPA. If Nintendo came out as directly supporting it (like Capcom did), I'd imagine that the interblag would simply catch fire from the news. Heck, just being associated with the ESA has generated enough infamy as it is.

Nope. SOPA and PIPA aren't laws (yet - hopefully never), and had nothing, zilch, zero to do with what happened to Megaupload aside from being related to internet piracy.

Secondly, Nintendo of America is a member of the Entertainment Software Association, which supports(? Or have they recanted their support yet?) SOPA. That's a SOPA topic, and from what I understand, aside from being associated with the ESA, all three major console platform holders (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) have backed away from support of SOPA.

Come to think of it, this thread needs a title change because it's causing confusion. EDIT: Done.

                      Re: R.I.P. - Megaupload (SOPA/PIPA are unrelated)

                      Icemage is correct:

                      MS backed out of SOPA
Nintendo back out of supporting SOPA as well.

Sony's tech/gaming side backed away from SOPA but their music, TV and movie divisions are so entrenched in the piracy battle the whole of Sony will never back out. Sony is Hollywood through and through once you get past tech and gaming. These other divisions don't want to understand what the tech and gaming divisions do and sometimes even the tech division wants to impose things on the gaming division that aren't good for gaming - like Vita's new memory format, for example.

The gaming side probably knows that was a stupid design choice, just as needing a memory card for saves from a game on a flash medium is also stupid, but the whole of Sony makes them run with it anyway. Its kinda like knowing your brother sucks at playing bass, but him insisting on joining the band anyway.

This is why I say Sony will never back out SOPA and why I'm pretty harsh on Sony, because when I complain about they I'm complaining about the whole Sony, not just those guys that make the games and I might like better than the rest of Sony.

I like the Sony that makes Ico or the Badman games and even the Sony that make awesome headphones. Its the rest of Sony that doesn't have my best interests at hear that I fully dislike.

                        QQ Moar?

Yeah, I agree it sucks to see Megaupload go down - if nothing else because it was an extremely fast connection and doesn't saddle the free users with the "you have to wait X hours before downloading another file" crap.

But come on, it was only a matter of time. There was assloads of illegally uploaded shit on there - The Pirate Bay was only the beginning. The real issue is trying to find a balance between fair use/file sharing & IP rights. Do ANY of the QQ'ers out there ever stop to think for a moment about how much work goes into the products they're downloading for free? How would you feel if you were getting robbed of all kinds of money because of pirating? While I detest SOPA & PIPA, you can't just outright dismiss the issue they're trying to address as so many people are want to do.

And honestly, fuck Anonymous - as far as I'm concerned, they're nothing but vigilantes/terrorists and should be thrown in jail. You want to get your point across? Do it legally and without fucking over innocent bystanders in the process.

Yeah, sure, I was so thrilled when PSN went down for me last year for three weeks, because you know I totally am the government even though I'm an independent contractor who works with businesses that aren't affiliated at all with anything even vaguely governmental.

For that matter, their retaliatory strike against various and sundry web sites today doesn't help matters at all either.

Actually... The three weeks it was down.. that actually wasnt them. Yes, the first time it was, to prove they could hack it, that's all. I am a supporter of anon. If anyone where to take down the government and reform it, its them.

Also, they where the ones that where behind the occupy protests.
