Think it was originally lvl 50. That's when the limit break quests start happening, right?

Yes, it was level 50, then every 5 levels was a level break. Genkai I, II, III, IV, and V

In Japan, yes, 50. The US release was concurrent with the ROTZ expansion pack, which raised the level cap to 75. So it depends on your definition.

Hence their detest with American players. By the time we got our hands on the game, they were already at EG. I can only imagine how annoying it must have been for them to see thousands of new players... who don't speak their language... bombarding a game that they thought of as their own for so long.

I can't say as I blame them... at least not initially. I remember hearing about them killing the Sky gods while I was still farming my Khazam keys.

Goes both ways. Some Americans were butthurt that Japanese players had a 1 year head-start. Others were convinced that JP are always a step ahead of NA players even years after the NA launch.

Eh? the JP already being at end game didn't mean much.

It was the rampant obnoxious shouting and rudeness that put them off (coupled with the language barrier of course). People shouting stupid shit like "Galka" "Meat" "Rod" "Pentathrust" "Mithra" "Fun" "Hole" and the like. Plus a lot of people just didn't know how to use the translator properly - just because the word is translated, doesn't mean it's going to be grammatically or contextually correct; For example, "Nice to Meet You." can be said as a greeting or a farewell in English, but in Japanese is strictly a greeting so that confuses them when you say that at the end of a party.

Another similar phrase is "Take Care" which in Japanese is a straight up word of caution and not a goodbye, so again it confounds them when you say that inappropriately. They also didn't really like the idea of looking for replacements to keep the party going and instead really preferred to just have the whole group go for as long as they all could in one sitting.

Just because it doesn't mean anything, it's not going to stop people from being stupid.

That's totally the dev's fault though. They shouldn't be including ambiguous phrases on either side of the translator.

Re: FFXI when it first came out

I think the funniest ones were the shouts for assistance with the first limit break. {Level}{Cap} 1. {Help me out!} translates to "Level hat 1. Save me!"

There's also the whole cultural thing about /check being horribly offensive to the JP because of how it translates to them... to which I have to question why the fuck they even put it in there like that in the first place. It's one thing for a foreign country to be insensitive to another's culture, but when it's your own people... yeah, really no excuse.

What does it translate to them anyways?

                        Not the players fault anyway.

Also is anyone thinking of the Euro players here? We got the game a long time after the US did... Euro players complain about the same things that the US players when they talk about JP looking down on them.

Yeah were always last to get things, I still have the original pack which had 6 cd's which included both expansions of ZIlart and Promy. remember how long it took to load the game the first time (12 hours!!)

I believe the literal translation is something like "so and so stares at you up & down" or something like that - something that is considered extremely rude & offensive in JP society.
