In all seriousness, why not just get a Magian 2-4 Staff? It would serve you better than the Mercurial Pole for everything that you want the Mercurial Pole for.

Oh I know... I guess I'm still attached to the desire to get the pole from back in the 75 days before ToM was an option.

The ToM Staff would be great too, but the work associate with it doesn't make me excited to start one.

The 2-4 trials are arguably the easiest of the multi-attack options, if somewhat monotonous. No more NMs after the first three (in particular, no VNMs), no items to collect, nothing but simply killing everything you come across.

As for the nostalgia, you simply just have to recognize it as such, and move on . . .

If I could ignore the nostalgia of this game and commit fully to the way it's played now, I'd be gone already.

Had Abyssea been a stand-alone game... I would have been over it in less than 6 months. The fact that I can retreat to the whimsical adventures of yester-yore is all that holds me in place. If I couldn't backtrack to old content and indulge myself in what I really enjoy about the game, I'd be playing TOR right now.
