Wow, and I thought it was annoying to have to keep going back through Palborough Mines all the time. I go to Monarch Linn for a weekly quest and it takes most of half an hour to get there even without the zone level caps.

Most of them aren't too bad to get to, though. Not that I wouldn't be more than happy for them to create an NPC (or just use Shami or his brother) to port you to the BCNM.

          Boneyard Gully especially...

Fuck Paradamo Tor & The Miasma. Though AFAIK you only need to climb it for the ENMs/CoP Missions, but even so I just hate Attohwa Chasm with a passion. All the ENM battlefields are annoying to get to really. And of course, this naturally results in artificially high rates on any sellable loot that comes from these BCs.

I'm always going to remember CoP as the expansion where everything was designed to intentionally annoy the player, from Doom to the level caps to the ledges to the slopes to the expell you from the BC moves to the farm items to make the fight easier (or possible) to True Sight EVERYWHERE.
You might be stopping to enjoy the game instead of rushing to cap, but that is not normal now. -Mhurron

CoP is the greatest example of storytelling in an MMO to date. So they didn't hold your hand the whole way through? Just complain, and maybe they'll make everything easier for you. Pro Tip: they already did.

Thus allowing a greater portion of the player base to access the amazing story. Yeah, removing annoying roadblocks that have little to do with the amazing story was a real dumb move on SE's part.

                  What CoP did right:
                  1) Amazing story and storytelling
                  2) Difficult boss fights that required strategy

                  What CoP did wrong:
                  1) Forcing absurd amounts of time-consuming travel on the player
                  2) Horrid dungeon design.

CoP dungeons failed because SE designed them like they did every other zone in the game. Filling every corner of a dungeon with IT++ mobs is not good design. You'd blow 1-2 hours trying to get through a bunch of EXP mobs on steroids and very little time actually solving puzzles or interacting with the dungeon itself. And while having items to weaken the boss was cool, the time needed to farm them was not. So you're looking at a minimum of 1 hour of prep work farming boss items, 30-45 minutes of travel time, 1-2 hours of getting through the dungeon, and 15-60 minutes of boss fight depending on the mission and how many times you fail. And even if all 6 members stuck with it for 4 hours, if you couldn't get past the boss you'd have to do it all over again some other day. That's not counting all the running around and cutscenes you had to do between battlefields.

FFXI's engine is pretty limited so I wasn't expecting D&D Online type dungeons with platforming and lots of traps. But if they were going to put such bullshit along the way, the least they could've done is throw in a checkpoint once you reach the boss room so anyone that's gotten that far can just warp there from the dungeon entrance if and only if they're with someone doing the mission or are doing the mission themselves. I liked how getting to boss fights in ToAU was much quicker, but ToAU sucked because a party of 75's faced no difficulty until the end and JP midnight waits are bullshit.

People always go on and on about CoP have ZOMGAWESOMESTORY. Granted I haven't finished it, but so far it hasn't been particularly exceptional. It's not bad, it just gets a lot more praise than I'd expect. Personally I find the nation missions a tad more interesting at times, as they're basically a slow and steady revelation that all three nations are basically assholes.

CoP only gets awesome at the end, when everything suddenly makes sense and you get to fight in what's probably the best BC area in the game. In the meantime you get to enjoy Prishe being stupid, Nag'molada being a dick, and those three Tarutaru being the most obnoxious things ever.

Preferred the Zilart storyline and I loved Sky as a zone rewarded for quest progression. Sea, while gaining access was a big, "Fuck yeah!" never impressed me as a zone (indoor and outdoor) and the whole quest chain felt like a tedious grind with characters I didn't give two fucks about.
