    Re: Job Adjustments! (8/19/2011)

Should have been a double attack "sphere" effect. That would give an actual reason for a rdm to be on the front lines with the melee.

Man... the more I think about it... the more I realize how disappointed I am with these last few THF updates. We've really gotten the shaft these last few. I'd really love to have something that makes it so THF brings more to the table than TH. TH III was the last good thing we really got. I'd love to have another dmg dealing ability like SA/TA. I'd even be slightly excited if SE made crossbow worthwhile. I've often wondered why THF doesn't get any WS's with crossbow.

Idk... intimidation might be okay... just dependent on many factors. But, no matter, it's dissapointing.

I really don't understand SE's design choices, given the job manifesto they laid out for Red Mage. I really and truly do not.
I was excited by the prospects of having an entirely new debuff line exclusive to RDM. Then they gave Addle to WHM.

Like Addle was a huge deal to begin with. But in case you didn't notice, they gave it to BRD, too:

I'm not sure why you're so fired up about these changes. 1.) They don't make RDM in any way useful or more powerful with the way the game is played, and 2.) You don't have a RDM that can use any of these new abilities anyway. But I guess it makes your theoretical RDM that you've been playing for several years now more awesome. In which case, congrats on your new power-boost.

...Ok, I think maybe I've been out of the loop about this long enough. What's your deal? By all indications, it seems like you've played Final Fantasy XI for a good while now, but every so often a comment comes up that suggests you've never been max level before.

He's never even gotten to level 50.

Unless that happened recently and he just didn't announce it. Regardless, while YM is a nice guy, and often has interesting takes on things, his endgame opinions are all theoretical.

Keeping up with the interlocking cycles of refresh and haste was like conducting an orchestra, magic bursting on skillchains (lol remember skillchains?) was a fun little skill test every fight or two when I could slip it in between cures and buffs, and my enfeebles actually landed and felt useful. I loved the way my job changed depending on the party composition, especially on the rare occasions I was backing up a whm and got to cast more offensively.

I also had a lot of fun in the pre-50 range, before staves gave us such a strong incentive to abandon swords and dual buff cycles ate up all the time we could have spent swinging. I never had illusions of being a "top tier" DD and it didn't matter. I wasn't just meleeing, I was debuffing and throwing out backup cures after TP moves, and taking turns opening Fusion for the mnk that just got Raging Fists. I loved feeling like I was contributing to the party a little bit in many different ways.

I think both styles are perfectly reasonable ways to want rdm to play. They both embody what I always felt was the strength and spirit of the rdm job, which was being able to fill the gaps in any party setup; to step into any niche and perform—maybe not as well as a specialist but well enough to get the job done. If I had my wish for rdm we'd go back to those days, when in my opinion rdm was most fun and balanced. To be honest, though, I can't imagine what SE could do to the job to put the genie back in the bottle. It's not just rdm that's changed, it's how we build parties, the way we level, the types of mobs we choose to fight. Forgive the drama, but I worry that the Vana'diel that my ideal red mage could exist in might be long gone. I just keep waiting for SE to pull a rabbit out of a hat somehow, and I keep being disappointed.

Actually it's ok that it's going to Bard as well since it will hopefully follow the precedent set by Elegy and stack with Red Mage's version for extra debuffing goodness.

This is what gets me. It could have been awesome for everyone. As it stands it will only be awesome for some folks and not applicable in a good portion of the game's content.

The only way it could have possibly been awesome for everyone would be if it stacked with Accession. I don't think that there's any possible way to deny that.
