Also, I just reinstalled using the new Ultimate pack from Steam, and most mobs have the wrong names. Like, I'll see a goblin, but it'll be named Giant Bee, and etc. All over the place. Is there any quick way to fix that? Delete a particular dat file and let the installer sort it out?

Ok, ok. I see. Yeah, sounds kind of tarded. My bad. So, full disclosure: A couple of friends started playing again, and lured me back to it. I needed to start back over, so I wanted to pick a solid DD. Said friends and I have been trying to scour forums looking for info on who were the top dogs, and who were sitting in corners, left out of all the fun reindeer games. A lot of class forums have very little activity, and so its hard to get a good read on the FFXI climate as someone that has been away for a while.

Which leads me back to my drunken cry for help. I've read all kinds of hilarious stuff. DRK parsing below WHM, SAM being invited to exp alliances, but don't offer anything. Now, I have a hard time believing said arguments, and is why I was hoping to get something a little deeper than the "WAR MNK NIN OR GTFO!" answer.

WAR and MNK are the hot DD jobs right now. WAR for proccing and MNK for tanking. With their empy WS they are considered the best DD along with NIN.

I answered your question, and nowhere did I say "or GTFO." Since you were thinking DRK or SAM, you were hoping someone would tell you that they were among the best and that you should level one of those. Please do level one, but I can't tell you that they are among the best inside Abyssea. I'm sure DRK would be fun, and I had a blast levelling SAM to 49. But in the current game climate, both are behind the three that I said as well as THF, DNC, BLU, and maybe others. If you are looking for a good solid answer, there it is, as plain as I can put it.

That wasn't aimed at you Squiggs, that's the answer everywhere. I added the gtfo for effect. I was just hoping it wasn't those 3 > giant gap > everyone else. That's all. Was figuring it was exaggerated, but I guess not.

With the advent of abyssea the dynamics of the game has changed drastically.

1. Hard as hell to find a party that isn't in abyssea now. Just like the old days, where Dynamis, sky and sea ruled and people leveled jobs to suite their needs for those area's. Now Abyssea Rules and people chose jobs to suite the needs of these area's There is not a finite answer as squiggs is trying to tell you. As support jobs he told you the best there is and that is pretty much it. For tanks it is Ninja. That is all I see. I see a few PLD's now but not in the abundance that I used to in the past. Now when I say past I mean from 2003-2007. I don't remember when the jobs changed and the lvl caps changed but I leveled before all of those and before wings of the goddess. Trying to compare the game from then to now is like trying to compare fruit and vegetables. Sure they are both a plant and use photosynthesis but other than that that is all they have in common. They type of players have changed etc.

For example my pet peve is a player who doesn't know how to play their job. I learned the hard way. getting to lvl 75 in my day was a chore in it self and i did. 75 was the max then. you have people who are a whm or you have people who can play a whm. Not every one is a whm. Another example is I can play ninja but I am not a ninja. So like squiggs said chose what you want to have fun with. but if you do try to do a job that will get you invites or your not going to have fun. And if you chose a job your going to have fun with become that job so you know it inside and out. Just because you have a job lvled to 90 doesn't mean you are that job and can play it well.

Gonna add a little bit more as well. I was speaking earlier of Empyrean weapon skills making those three the top tier. After you get passed empy ws, the next tier is any job that has a multi-hit crit weapons skill (i.e. Raging Rush, Evisceration, Hexa, etc.). This is probably why you saw somewhere that a WHM outparsed a DRK. This is also why SAM and DRK have fallen damagewise.

Outside Abyssea is a whole other story. I would think SAM is still top tier outside, with DRK being very good as well.

I just don't want to be terrible? I'm starting from scratch, so you know, I didn't want the first thing I level to be "meh". You know? I had read a bunch of stuff that seemed crazy to me and was hoping for clarification. Squiggs has helped.

I like MNK, I've played it before.Are most of them tanks now? Because I see lots of that on various boards. VS looks dope.

Are most of them tanks now?

They are tanks for two reasons mainly, from what I can put together. First is the incredible damage output they have, so they are more tanking by default than anything else. And, second is that they can push their HP levels up to between three and four thousand, so they can survive most anything that gets thrown their way, as long as they have a WHM to cure bomb them with C5 and C6.

Well I got installed and set-up FFXI again today and I wanted to cry when I saw all of my lovely macros were gone.....

What fun it will be to recreate all my macros...
