Final Fantasy XI could come to PlayStation Vita -Destructoid

Its an interesting idea, but I fear SE would shoehorn this into the existing multiplatform setup and that would be problematic for a PSV version of the game. That and it this version would need to be an F2P game because the console and handheld community just cannot grasp the subscription model. That and if the F2P model was applied for the PSV version and it was able to interact with the existing community, there would be a tremendous backlash from the existing community.

I wouldn't mind seeing an FFXI game with a fresh community actually willing to help each other and a PSV version would be a great way to do that, but voice chat would be a must and I have my doubts about Sony and their ability to make the sort of storage this game would need available.

I don't even recall them saying the internal storage Vita would have, I know their Pro Duo minis aren't up to snuff for a game like this. SanDisk is getting there with their own format, but Sony isn't.

Though, to be fair, much of the original game could probably be placed on Vita's game format. Still, dunno if I could get behind a game that would likely eat up the up all my flash storage.

Seems unlikely. I disagree that a they would have to do away with a subscription fee. No way they would pass up that cash cow. The big hurdle I foresee with this is convincing people to play an mmo on a hand held. Unless they make it single player, which is a possibility I suppose.

Really, they ought to be focusing on pumping up their subscription numbers via a decent recruitment campaign and releasing a graphics update. I mean, they've got a beautiful engine for 14, why not plug in the XI gameplay?
You might be stopping to enjoy the game instead of rushing to cap, but that is not normal now. -Mhurron

Seems like a pretty terrible idea honestly. Handhelds are not a platform that's suited to hosting MMOs.

So your problem is not the real hurdles in getting this to succeed, but silly hangups people invent about handhelds and what they can/can't do?

You do realize that the number of people in Japan that own PSPs just for Monster Hunter vastly outnumber the PC gamers playing FFXI right now, right? I'd also have to say having a proper MMO on a handheld would be something for Sony to parade about while Apple is selling the video game equivalents of whoopie cushions and fake vomit.

Right, because a touch interface couldn't use macros and players couldn't just use voice to communicate to each other? Make a standalone PSV version and you could do those things with incredible ease. Do you even know what things do before you cast judgement on ideas regarding them? PSV's got front and back touch and will have voice chat so what doesn't it have that other versions don't if we take the need for a keyboard out and replace it with VC?

I don't see a problem. The macros are still going to be a bitch to write regardless of your preferred platform.

Can you honestly tell me that you think putting FFXI on a handheld is anything other than a terrible idea and a waste of resources to boot?

An MMO built from the ground up designed to be played on a handheld might have a chance, but even that would face an uphill battle. Porting FFXI? Now that's just crazy talk. Only use I could see for that is so you could do your crafting an AH camping on the go, but that's about it.

More over the nature of how games are played on hand helds. FFXI in particular is about hours of grinding. I don't see a 10 year old MMO really being touted as a triumph of gaming advancement, even if it is on a handheld. And it's not as if there aren't MMOs on the iphone.

RPGs are more popular on handhelds in Japan.

Did you not notice PSP and DS were where JRPGs went and how they don't happen on console that much now? The "MMOs" you're talking about are glorified Diablo clones, not proper MMORPGs. Anything can run a Diablo clone, really and that's partly what Monster Hunter is.

You know you're losing an argument when you have to dismiss your counter examples as "not proper".

As for RPGs on handhelds being ascendant, I would wager this likely arises from being able to skimp on production value so you don't have to create a stunningly beautiful experience in order to tell a story or create a quirky game system.

wait your calling Monster Hunter a Diablo clone?... Really? The game is no where near like Diablo

Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter are very popular in Japan though, and I wish it had the same treatment here in the states -.- as I am a big fan of both myself.

Dungeon crawlers and multiplayer RPGs I can see on handhelds, but a MMORPG? no.

At the same time, I like alot of my RPG playing to be on my TV, I only really got into Phantasy Star Portable 2 when I got it on my PsPGO, and use a PS3 controller on my TV

Step 1 :: turns on PSvita and starts up FFxi.
Step 2 :: plugs USB keyboard in to PSvita to communicate w/ anyone in FFxi.
                    Step 3 :: feels stupid.

He added that a PS3 port of the game is definitely not happening, due to difficulties with the hardware.

Uh, what? Last I checked, while SONY did in fact remove the physical emulation hardware, the software is still on there which is why PS1 games off the PSN work. Moreover, we have PS2 games being remade on Blu Ray that run just fine on current models.

I call bullshit on Tanaka. No, the real reason is what Wada states year ago that it just wouldn't be worth the cost at this point (too bad for them that XIV hasn't proven to be all that worthy of said money either, at least not yet. Still hoping though.)

You did not provide any actual examples. Games happen to have names, you know.

For the likes of a larger entity like SE, its big savings, yes, but how is that bad when you're making the game for the handheld market and the handheld market is the majority in your country? Your words seem to have some serious butthurt behind them.

The only real difference between Diablo and Monster Hunter is MH's grind comes from crafting system on steroids and fame nstead of EXP and not having to pray for rare weapons drops, but monster parts instead. Aside from that, they exactly the same.

Anyway, I can't say I'm surprised at the responses so far. You can be given examples of how it could work effectively within the context of the hardware and you'll still hold on to your concept that it has to work exactly like it does now or its no good.

Just keep in mind we all thought arcades were going to be around forever at one point and that Captian Picard's data pad was another piece of science fiction. Now arcades are dead in America and we have iPads. People told me four years ago that we were fifteen years away from having streaming movies.

I never underestimate the evolutions of technology.

I'm going to piss off the whole thread by saying that I would LOVE to have an MMO on a handheld, especially one I currently play like FFXI. The control scheme is all there and it would be great for those moments where laptops are too unwieldy.

Furthermore, for communication, there's already tons of PS2/360 users out there using those little thumb pads that snap onto a controller; hell, how finalized is the design of the Vita? It could have a sliding keyboard we don't know about.

Also, PS2/360 say hi BBQ, plenty of them have subscriptions.

                              I wasn't discounting them, stiil...

Waaaaay more people playing Monster Hunter on PSP than FFXI has subscribers. Capcom did the unthinkable in MH - they created something that can compete with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest for attention. You know as well as I do SE is scrambling for ways to combat that - why else even bring up a game like FFXI for PSV?

At least, I'm hoping that's whats going on with SE, otherwise they don't really have a good reason for why they have so many projects dripping out as slowly as they do. FFvsXIII still isn't even in full production yet and KHIII is still only on the books.
