You know, there are times, such as sitting in a park or riding in the back of someone's car, when maybe, just maybe you should be doing something other than playing an MMO*. For other times, there are laptops. This is a non-issue. I also find the (completely non-fact based) suggestion that people who play MMOs are afraid of outside to be ridiculous, because seriously.

Right now this shit is all just theoretical, and anyone tossing around their ideas with anything vaguely resembling authority are just making themselves look like idiots.

I know you hate speculation Murphie. You probably like everything to be a grand, wonderous mystery, but part of speculation is taking the theoretical, basing it on existing information and following that to a logical conclusion. Perhaps not the real outcome, but a possible one. That doesn't make logic a bad thing, even if it possibly feels like a spoiler to you.

PSV is system that sits somewhere between a PS2 and closer to a PS3, but not quite. We live in a world where big complicated games from five or six years ago can now be pocketed and taken anywhere. I can now take The Legend of Zelda: OOT and MGS3 anywhere and play it in 3D.

'Tis witchcraft, to be certain, and I'm sure some people thought it would never be possible this soon.

As Cid said above, I could get behind the ability to visit the AH, or chat with your friends, or do some other basic functions while on a mobile device, but otherwise I don't really see a huge need there. I personally don't feel that the inability to access my MMO at any time day or night, regardless of location is in any way a negative.

People didn't see the point of cars when they were made, horses and walking worked just fine. People didnt see the need for e-mail when it came around as old mail worked just fine. Why, dagnabbit, writing letter was far more personal because the act of writing showed you cared!

This geriatric sort of thinking - that we should only have things certain people find a need or a point in - its as hilarious as Kathy Lee's concept of what a man over 30 "should" be doing.

I put a question directly to you after you handed out a vague example. If anything here was a dodge, its telling me I could have just googled it when you obviously had to google it to give me an answer. You even gave us the search criteria after using it.

In any case, I highly doubt this so-called MMO is even close to the scale or complexity of WoW, FFXI or anything on the market. At the end of the day, iOS games are to ramen as PSV and 3DS are to steak dinners.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a horrible idea, not because of technical problems but because FFXI and most MMOs require significant and contiguous amounts of time to get anything done? If you're not in a position to whip out a laptop and play then you're obviously not in a position to give your undivided attention to the game and play for 1-2 hours straight.

I play on a laptop that cost about $400. It runs it really well, so I imagine you could get away with less. Or you could use one of the other methods to play FFXI.

Saying "A handheld device for playing more than the bare minimum of things in FFXI seems impractical" is not anything like saying "This idea is dumb and you should feel dumb" but apparently that's what people are seeing.

I play exclusively on a laptop and have for years. I don't have a problem with it.

My laptop plays the game, and the majority of new games just fine... I'm just not sure, I think it's just personal preference. My PC is in a place where I'm not doing to be distracted easily while my laptop tends to be used in areas where people are passing through or can easily bug me or distract me.

I can imagine that a handheld version would have the same issues. When it comes to the choice as a gaming platform, given the choice between carrying a laptop around and carrying a Playsation Vita around in my backpack I think I would opt for the lighter option.

Yeah but for a game like FFXI where so much of the information you need is delivered in text, that tiny screen just isn't going to cut it, and that's the major malfunction with using any handheld for a text-heavy MMORPG.
