Version Update Delay

Rolling blackouts and restrictions on public transportation have been implemented across eastern Japan as part of the earthquake and tsunami disaster relief effort. Consequently, we have chosen to delay the upcoming major version update initially planned for mid-April.

While the new release date has been provisionally revised to May, we are unable to provide a detailed schedule at this point in time. The previously announced world merger will likewise be postponed.

We would like to express our apologies to our players, and will do our utmost to keep you abreast of the latest developments. Thank you for your continued understanding in this difficult time.

Yeah, not surprising at all, I'm surprised they didn't just announce it when they announced the server shutdown.

Surprising would be if they only took XI down for a week, I'm expecting at least 3 weeks if not over a month.

Over a month of downtime would probably be enough to lose them some subscriptions as folks drift off to try out other games. Here's hoping they can bounce back if it comes to that.

And yet, when I said that about FFXIV, someone tried to tell me that wouldn't happen. I'd be shocked if XIV rebounded after this.

The only thing that surprises me is they said it will likely be in May when today was the original update day.

April would be understandable, but May implies that it was never really ready for today in the first place so glad to see SE hasn't lost their penchant for bullshitting us amidst the tragedy.

That said, I really hope things improve quickly over there. That reactor is quickly getting out of hand, there's like 50 guys IIRC inside right now risking their lives to get it under control.

It was never mentioned for today. You assumed it was because of the announcement that the Merger would take place at the same time as the update.

Here was the original message

World Merge, which is scheduled to take place on Mar. 16, 2011, will now be conducted along with the upcoming major version update.

Here is what it was changed to

The World Merge, which was originally scheduled to take place on Mar. 16, 2011, will now be conducted at the same time as the upcoming major version update, which will include, among other things, adjustments to relieve congestion in certain areas, and new game content.

While I can see where the assumption came up, it is not what they meant.

Ah okay. The way they worded it it sounded like today was the original update + world merge. So it's just a 1 month delay, which means we may or may still lose a major update for this year which would suck.
