  • Some advice as far as what jobs I should level.

    Hey everyone,

I recently returned to the game to join yygdrasil's linkshell on valefor, and I could use some help determining which jobs I should level and in what order. I'm currently working on dancer with a friend who is leveling bst, and we plan to duo most of the way to 99. My concerns, though, is with just DNC on my list I'll be kinda meh for endgame events. I have experience with BRD and WHM, so I was considering leveling one of those. I realize WHM is really OP in endgame right now, and BRD has always been amazing, but have you noticed there's still demand for these jobs or are the needs mostly satisfied?

I'm also very much interested in COR, so it's possible I could level that too. I plan to have all of the mages + support at 99 eventually, I just need a little advice as to which one to powerlevel uip to 99 first in order to get myself established with a few shells. I realize it's a bad idea to level something based solely on endgame viability, and that wouldn't be the case at all here. I'm fond of all of the jobs I've mentioned, I just need some input as to how things are shaping up at 90.

THF I'm interested in, too, but that seems to be more heavily gear dependent than some of the others I've mentioned.

    Give me your thoughts!

I couldn't tell you what the current state of endgame is right now, but let me just mention honestly to you that if you want to play a job at endgame, you should pick one you'll enjoy. BRD, BLM, and WHM are some of the highest burnout jobs in the game, where you get basically stuck on any of those jobs damn near constantly. If you're going to level one of those (I know you didn't mention BLM but it belongs on the list) then make sure you're prepared to be stuck on it a lot.

That being said, I think all of those jobs still have use, but again, I'm not sure. I'd concentrate more on playing something you will enjoy rather than something that will burst you up to endgame and ultimately cause you to burn out on the game early. That's the best advice I can give you. If you still want actual data as to which jobs are most coveted, I'm sure someone will be able to answer that for you. But I'd recommend not leveling something just as an endgame ticket. Hell, I leveled WHM because I loved it and still after 9 months (ish) of playing almost nothing else, I was so sick of WHM that I ended up quitting the game.

    So yeah.

I definitely see what you were saying. My bard wasn't amazingly geared at 75, but I was always on it regardless. Part of me wants to avoid being brdonry, but another part of me doesn't want to encounter the situation where I ask to join something and get GTFO as a response.

      Ahhh...the dilemma.

In that case, the best thing you can do is level more than one job - and keep a couple of those uber-useful jobs on that list. Since you already plan to do that, I think you'll be all right. And if you find a linkshell that has a lot of diverse people with a lot of different jobs, you'll probably be able to switch out when you want to.

I'm leveling dnc with my friend, but I'm able to play a good deal more than he is, so there's a good chance I'll be able to work on one of the more useful jobs while I'm playing by myself. One thing I intend to do this time around is not be so ultra-focused on a goal of endgame pwnage. I'll log on and do what seems fun at the moment, whether that be helping people out, working on some missions, soloing NMs...etc. Endgame will be a part of the picture, but I don't want it to be the only picture. For that reason I plan to level DNC, BST, PUP...jobs that aren't necessarily the "go to" choices for events, but are genuinely enjoyable.

Thanks for the help Aksannyi, I appreciate it.

I'll probably work on DNC along with either BRD or WHM to start off ^^.

Also don't worry much about advancing DNC ahead, after all you can always sync to level up with your friend.

That's very true! I do want to make sure I have some progress on my other jobs, though, too, so it seems like this method might work for me. As far as endgame is concerned....what exactly does that consist of nowadays? Do people still do older content or has that been rendered obselete by new events (I sure hope not; one thing I enjoyed about xi is the fact that there's a huge variety of things to do once you hit the level cap. I found myself tiring very quickly of WoW and the like because there just wasn't a lot to do once you hit 85)

I know it's possible to upgrade previous luxury items to compete with the new ones. Would it be worth...say...trying to get marduk or skadi in hopes of upgrading it? Or have I really missed that train.

Something I've liked is that older gear still remains viable as the years go on. I sure hope SE hasn't removed this element with the cap raise and all that.

                It seems like most jobs are getting some nice boosts from Abyssea armor, but I wouldn't know, been away for too long. <_<;

Either way I don't think relic, abj, etc. armor (or even AF) has been displaced completely by the new gear.

Speaking purely from an XP standpoint, I never go more than 10 minutes without an invite on my WHM. I don't do any events though, so burnout is not an issue. DNC is a very viable "endgame" job right now. Current endgame, however, is not the same as it used to be (I'm not an "endgame" player yet, so this is mostly what I've picked up in converstion). Small groups can get most of the current content done without much of an issue.

As far as gear goes, a lot of it has some use until you get AFv3 +2. And even then, it can probably be used as a macro piece.

                  99 PUP
