  • The FINAL FANTASY XI Team Answers Your Questions! (01/28/2011)

FINAL FANTASY XI Official Web Site

The FINAL FANTASY XI community is ever abuzz with discussion on in-game content. The development and operations teams would like to take this opportunity to address some of our fans' most pressing questions and concerns.

Q: At present, there is a significant gap between experience point yield in Abyssea as compared to all other areas. Furthermore, skill growth often lags behind level gain. Will this imbalance be addressed?

A: Yes. The minor patch scheduled for mid-February will usher in an experience boost for non-Abyssea areas, as well as relaxed skill improvement conditions.

Q: It was previously announced that the drop rates for Wieldance Cards will be increased, but the rates for other items dropped by the NMs Apademak and Dragua also seem excessively low. Will these be addressed as well?

A: Yes. Along with addressing the issue that was causing low drop rates for Wieldance Cards, we will be implementing other balance adjustments in the February update. This will include increased drop rates for other items obtainable from the enemies mentioned above.

Q: Can you share any information on plans for new armor and equipment?

A: While we cannot reveal specific details or promise a specific implementation date at this time, we can say that we hope to respond to players' enthusiastic wishes for new subligaria at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Q: Are there any plans to adjust the method for obtaining Empyrean Armor upgrade items?

A: We have received a wide range of feedback regarding these items. In particular, we understand players' concerns that the random nature of acquisition makes it difficult to obtain one's desired seals, that seals for feet and certain jobs' body armor are harder to obtain than others, and so forth. While the potential game balance repercussions of this issue make it unfortunately impossible to make any promises at this time, rest assured that we will continue to listen closely to your feedback as we consider potential adjustments for the future.

Q: What exactly is the effect of the "Enhances Addendum: White/Black" bonuses granted by the Scholar armor "Savant Gown +1/+2"?

A: We hope players will figure this out for themselves by experimenting in game, but one hint we can give is that they will provide a bonus related in some way to enmity.

Q: I'm always running out of lines in my macros. Will this be addressed in any way?

A: While there currently no plans to increase the maximum number of macro lines, we will be implementing a change in the February mini-patch that will allow "/wait" to be placed on the same line as the previous command. This should allow for greater flexibility in macro creation.

Q: There have been no updates to the auto-translate dictionary recently. Can we expect any terms to be added in the future?

A: PlayStation 2 memory limitations have placed us in a difficult situation where the addition of new terms to the auto-translate dictionary would require the deletion of existing entries. Given this, there are no current plans to add new terms, and we ask for your patience and understanding as we consider all possibilities. In a related matter, we are looking into updating the glossary contained in the Play Guide available on the official web site.

Q: Has there been any progress in resolving the insufficient hard disk space issues that have caused errors for some PlayStation 2 users when installing version updates?

A: Up until now, the installation process has been conducted by downloading all the new files in one batch before the old files were deleted, requiring temporary HDD space equivalent to roughly two times the size of the patch itself. Starting from the February minor update, the installer program will be updated to download and delete files individually, significantly reducing the required space. This update will be applied to the Xbox 360 version as well.

A little disappointed in the questions they've chosen, especially compared to last time. The XP and skillup boost looks interesting though. Wonder if it's going to be enough to draw people out of abyssea...

I like the idea of an exp boost and skill boost as well. Leveling smn skill is a pain and leveling my lower level subs is just a hassle. I haven't seen more than 9 ppl lfp in the passed few weeks and the levels are so varied. I've gone to doing other things and just leaving my pt flag up for hours. I'm so glad they are going to address this.

Also, macro changes are always welcome. Though I wish they were adding more space, /wait on the same line is a start. Maybe it will allow me more room to macro in more smn gear.

They probably don't bother with that, on PC due to the windower, on the PS2 due to system limitations or something.

I wonder how many people are still playing on the PS2 who don't own a PS3 already. Because it's way past the point of considering discontinuing PS2 support and moving on to the PS3.

Wow. That's the S-E of old most of us know and hate. A bunch of questions with vague answers amounting to nothing more than we're listening and sometime in the future something might happen maybe.

I especially like the Empyrean armour comments. They know that there is an imbalance in difficulty certain jobs have in obtaining armour via the quests (Ninja for example) but they won't do anything because of game balance repercussions (wtf?).

This Q&A actually seems to do more harm than good to a company whose reputation with gamers is already in tatters. I mean, PS2 limitations...

              I'm excited for subligars

What I'm not excited for is more goddamn PS2 limitations. It's time to overhaul the damn engine and begin preparations for dropping PS2 support so the game can continue developing. We're not going to get there when console limitations keep making it impossible to maintain the most basic quality of life changes like adding terms to the auto-translator.

Yeah, NIN honestly doesn't have any good options for Body Seals. The drop rate on AF3 Feet is still bullshit as well, especially in Attohwa.

I'd like to see spells drop more frequently in Heroes areas too - the fuck if I'm paying over a million gil for the 5 new BLM spells I need.

Wow, that's pretty ... uh ... meh. The problem isn't the need for /wait lines, it's the need to change a more than a dozen pieces of gear in one macro. You don't need a /wait line for that. Lol. Well, they're trying. I guess.

Have to agree with cidbahamut, too. I guess there's still a lot of people playing on the PS2? But seriously, who doesn't have a computer that's capable of running FFXI these days? Since there's still so many people playing FFXI it might not be a terrible thing for SE to drop PS2 support in favor of making new adjustments and improving the game.

I mean come on, it's been seven years and we still don't have {maybe}, for fuck's sake.

Aren't most of the PS2's still capable of running the game going to crap-out soon anyway? It's not like they have an infinite shelf life. Christ mine broke after 4 or 5 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if, "PS2 limitations" has lost them far more PC players than it's retained PS2 players so far.

I'm sure the number of people who have raged quit over the lack of new auto-translator entries would be fewer than the number of current PS2 players.

Really, get a grip--the impact of "PS2 limitation" on the game isn't nearly as severe as most people have imagined. It's not as if the developers could target a machine/platform of unlimited capability, they'd have the time and money to add unlimited number of features.

                        * * *

Take the auto-translator feature for example; the problem is not able to fit the dictionary of all the game terms in PS2's memory. The solution? Don't keep everything in memory--which is something the client already does for items terms. The dictionary is already dynamic; the change that's needed is just for the server to send the translation info along with chats from other players--i.e. a 'markup'.

The point, though, is that PS2 isn't the real limitation for that problem--it's just a scapegoat, when the real solution would require a good number change to both server and client code, which would cost SE time and money--something which it doesn't want to do.

I'm sure when we say people have quit over the PS2 limitations that they haven't just quit over the auto-translate thing. "PS2 limitations" has been SE's staple excuse for so much over the years that people are tired of just getting lip service from them. Part of the reason I quit was definitely their crappy communication skills. They have gotten better but they are still a pretty frustrating company to deal with when it comes to getting answers for just about anything.

I play on PS2. I have absolutely ZERO interest in playing on a computer. Ain't. Gonna. Happen. I stare at a computer for 40 hours a week at work. I don't want to sit in an uncomfortable chair at the computer -- I want to sit in my recliner & play video games on the big ol' flat screen TV as the good lord intended... and I don't want to use that much memory on my laptop since I use it for something else that takes a bunch of memory. I also don't want to run the risk of losing my character & all the work I've put into her to a hacker. The only people I know who have been hacked & lost everything have been on PC. I'm happy on my "safe" little system.

My husband's PS2 finally died with the last big update. It doesn't read discs any more. I had to do a clean install on mine (which reminds me - I should upload macros to the server). DH is now playing on his 360. We got a 360 copy of the game for me -- when my PS2 dies, we'll get another 360. I'm hoping my PS2 will last a while longer 'cause I really don't like playing with the 360 controller (I've subbed for DH when he's in a party & needs to get food or shower or something). We have a PS3, but we haven't gotten FFXI for it yet (no need at the moment).
