  • Heroes of Abyssea Official Site Unveiled! (11/17/2010)

With the release of Heroes of Abyssea drawing near, the official homepage for this latest battle area add-on presages its arrival! See what riches—including all-new pieces of Empyrean armor—await those who would champion this shattered realm.

A promotional trailer will also grace the site in the near future. Don't miss it!

Check out all the details on the Heroes of Abyssea site today!

*The Heroes of Abyssea content will become playable for purchasing customers with the release of the next FINAL FANTASY XI version update, scheduled for early December.

    FINAL FANTASY XI

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few of the AF3's are just OK, but most of them are really impressive fully completed. It's too bad MNK has those stupid pants because the rest of that set is boss, but I'm absolutely loving the artwork on these sets.

Bard gear looks GORGEOUS, I've been hoping the coat would be white with black accents like the Errant is. The tumor hat even gives it a nice touch. Even if it's not the best stats (which is unlikely) it's worth getting the NQ just for city gear.

Puppetmaster is... interesting, especially with the things on the belt and the star on the shirt.

BLU, SCH, SMN, DRK, PLD, BLM are by far the most attractive to me, just from looks. PLD especially -- I've always thought their AF/Relic should be a helm instead of a crown. This set does just that.

Man I can’t wait to see the stats on these new pieces (getting a little ahead of myself). I’m quite happy with the Bst/Pup/Smn thus far.

We’re still missing 1 accessory piece right? Wondering if after this update will add another. .

Ha, is the Bst tanking that Roc or is the Blm about to get destroyed?

Well, for pup we have neck, waist and back accessories that are Job-specific. Even if they come out with an Empyrean back piece, I'm not sure it can do better than the Pantin Cape for PUP. Other jobs I'm sure they can, but I'm not so keen on accessories since I've never seen any that could be stored. I still hold out hope that the visible Empyrean armor will get into the storage system.

Are you talking about the WoE mantle that starts with a K? The one with automaton acc? Sure that’s a JSE piece but I was thinking more of an Emp type (such as ‘Cirque’ Cape/Mantle).

Seems like each Job has 2 so far (Ferine back/neck, Cirque Neck/Waist, Callers Neck/Waist). I only ask since all jobs seem to have a variation of 2 out of the 3 slots.

Armor aside (Just trying to think of some cool things to look forward too)…

Are there any mobs that we haven’t seen in Abyssea zones, aside from the shit-ton of Beastmen?
I could be wrong but it also seems like were missing some Arcane mobs too (Weapons, Pots, Dolls)
Elements as well (A huge element boss would be a scary surprise lol).

Roaming Avatars iirc aren’t that important but I think were only missing Shiva/Fenrir/Diabolos.

There is a Khim boss so I wouldn’t be surprised to also see a Hydra/Cerb.

I've finally started doing Abyssea to kill time while I wait for lvl 99 (or a new MMOG, whichever comes first), so I guess this is a plus.

Sad part is I know I should start complaining about RDM AF already, but I actually like how the last 2 pieces look like even if the rest was pretty meh.

PS > BLM AF looks pretty good btw.

The last two pieces look amazing, particularly by themselves, actually.

I'll get the RDM body just because it looks good. Hat still looks out of place though.

RDM Body is indeed incredibly sexy, love it. Not sure why you guys seem to hate the rest of it, looks gorgeous to me. I'll agree that the shape of it is kinda off compared to AF and Relic, but I like the over all red & gold design.

I'm still drooling over how fucking sweet NIN is...

All of this armor is pretty sexy, and it's a shame whoever is working on this stuff isn't putting that creativity to use in FFXIV. Twenty ranks into the game and you're on your second set of armor? And the twenty ranks after that include another two sets that are reskins of the first two...

From my perspective, it's good that FF14 team wasn't able to steal all the talents from FF11 and shove them into that failure of sub-beta quality release. (Insert one more 'lol' for the glacier-speed UI in a video game here.)

Let's put the better devs on the working (and revenue producing) project instead of the sinking-ship one, thank you very much.

leaving no trace in the water.

Either game can generate revenue, but at the moment I believe FFXIV has more potential. It's not a completely inaccessible to anybody who has a life style game that could easily attract a more casual crowd. Casual = $$$. Typically, you have to kill your integrity to make money from casuals, but SE may have a way to do it that leaves them with more than just a shred of dignity.

Er, $$$ = $$$. Nothing else can substitute.

Right now, FF14 is more or less "free to play," right? That means no $$$ from subscription fees. Yet, its daily login numbers are still falling, AFAIK. If the next update reverses the trend, then it may have a future, yet, especially if it does well on the PS3 launch. Otherwise, it's just another Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion.

Historically, the first month or two of launch (in a market area) pretty much predicts the subscription over the life time for MMORPGs. (EVE Online may be the only major title which has significantly bucked this trend.) SE screwed the launch badly by releasing a bad product. While just about anything written in code is fixable with enough time and money, SE will never get the initial launch back--much of FF14's 'potential' had already been wasted.

                          * * *

Personally, new armor pieces don't terribly good looking in general. Oh well. I'm sure I'll get used to them sooner or later.

It feels like I'm barely scratching the contents of the first two Abyssea add-on even with two regular LS sessions and several ad hoc small teams every week in those zones. It's going to be a bit overwhelming to have yet more stuff from another add-on.

I wouldn't concern yourself, chances are this content will be lasting the remaining players till the servers go down.
