Error problems…and afraid of the answer

I have a feeling I know the answer im going to get but I’m gonna tell my story and ask anyway.

So maybe a month or 2 ago I decided to work on a h2h trail. One of the trials was to kill the NM Orctrap 3 times. Upon zoning into Carpenters landing I started walking and shortly after I typed “/map” to see where I was going. As soon as I hit enter, I was booted from the game. Like completely booted/shut down/program closed. Logged back in and tried it a few more times. Same thing. I even tried checking the map from the menu section. Same results.

I was able to walk around freely and attack blah blah blah…but again the map would shut me down. I was with a friend, so after an hour trying to figure it out, I just had him lead me to the NM spot and I went afk while he finished the trial for us.

Since I haven’t been in CL for nearly 3 years (yea…seriously, does anyone go there?), I decided to let it go. The /map works in every other zone (so far).

Today, i decided to finish up another trial. So I go get runic pass and try warping to Mt Z. As soon as I zone in…I get booted with an error message saying
“Error FFXI – 2003
Failed to Read Data”

And now I can’t log in on my main character at all. I just keep getting that error just before I’m able to move. I can get on mules but not main. I was there like a month ago so it’s not like CL where it’s been neglected for years.

Anyone have similar issues? Any idea if theirs a solution?

If you go to Bluegartr website, under FFXI advanced, there is a reputable, clean, legit in all ways download of FFXI with all patches/updates through the 3rd of Nov. 2010. Check it out, if the file check dosen't work for you ^^

Let’s say…hypothetically…that I have to re-install.

I lent my FFXI disks to a friend like 2 years ago. He later ended up moving a few hours away and like the great friends that we are…we sorta haven’t talked in a while. (keep in mind I said disk's'…so yea…from like 8 years ago).

Am I just better off picking up one of the new collectors additions? Which I assume is my only option.

i replied too slow and didnt see this. Might have to try it when i get home. maybe i should be thankful it happened today and not thursday.

Well, it might be a good idea to buy the newest version of FFXI that you can, incase you get a new computer or something happens (Like hard drive failure.), you can easily reinstall it.

The steam version is pretty nice as it comes with all 4 expansions and the three mission packs. Just to note it contains no patches post-WoTG so expect a VERY long update process. To compare, it took me a day to download FFXI ultimate edition from Steam but it took three days to patch the bloody thing.

Ok…more questions then… (sorry).

I’m thinking of reformatting my computer. Basically I can put the OS disk in, and reboot and run from disk correct?
Once this is done, I know it will pretty much be wiped out and anything I added will be gone, but will I still be able to get on web pages?

obviously I’m not very computer savvy

ha, this might not be a bad thing. It will be nice to eventually log back in and have more than 1 or 2 stones.

Yes, your disk has an OS on it and that stands for Operating System. So it will put the basics on for you to be able to interact with your PC and the internet. You'll put the disk in, restart your PC, and follow the prompts that will come up basically. After it has reformatted you can put the disk away until you need it again someday.

Again…I suck at computers so please bear with me.

Will I need to update things like um…my graphics card or other things?
I have not physically added anything to the computer so it’s filled with all the original parts it came with. Does the OS disk update those things as well or will I need to download drivers (if thats the right wording) from the brand’s webpage.

Yes, if you wipe a HD and reinstall then you will have to update graphics card drivers, update the OS, install a .zip program (WinRar, etc), download video codecs if you watch videos on your pc, download Adobe Flash, download Adobe PDF, etc etc etc.

i have a Dell computer, would i be able to get all or most of the stuff from their site?

My work has acutioned off old printers (w/o disks) before and i've gone to the brand's webpage to download what was needed. is it pretty much the same steps?

I haven't used the Dell website to update a PC so I'm not sure what they all offer but yes I would start there. You might need to update the graphics card at the manufacturers website.
